Description
SizesBy John Ciardi
=========================
If you were as big as a giant flea,
How much would you have to grow to be,
The size of the tiniest head-to-tale,
Very-most-midgety baby whale?
I mean to say – and it’s no surprise –
Whatever you do about your size,
There’s always something a size or two,
Very much bigger or smaller than you.
I mean to say, what’s big of some,
Is small of others. Now get along home.
And whether you stay or wander far,
Be just the size of whatever you are.
=========================
(Takai found this poem she had copied into her grade school notebook, and I just thought that poem was too appropriate, fun and cute all at the same time. I just had to share it.)
100,000 Pageviews
Well, it’s been a long path to get to this point. I had no idea that my art would be so well received, or that I would make so many friends who shared my ‘interest’. I can’t thank you all enough. To my online friends, who taught me to come out of my shell, and showed me I wasn’t the only person in the world to have this fetish. To my RL friends, who didn’t freak out when I told them. (Except for my Brother. He kind of acted a little kooky for a while after that. Now he just thinks it’s funny.
Of course, a huge thank you to my fiancé Takai. You inspire me to try so much harder, and to better myself every day. When I was working on this picture, I didn’t want to do a background. I always cop out when it comes to backgrounds. But she always knows when I can do better, and when I’m just taking the easy route out of sheer laziness. Thank you for being there to push me, and even if I get whiny, I always appreciate it. I wouldn’t be half the person I was today if you weren’t there to coax me.
Measuring Up
Okay, I know this question will be asked- Why am I measuring Takai’s ankle of all things? The answer is simple. Takai’s been trying to lose weight lately, and as you could probably imagine, it’s practically impossible to keep a running record of someone’s weight when their scale can range anywhere from 8 to 80 feet.
So then, to determine her weight, first we have to determine her height. Good luck measuring her head to toe. With a few creative applications of algebra though, we can find out just how big she is. Thus explains why Takai has a tape-measure-wielding Chibi wrapped around her ankle. Simple, right?

Excellent as usual. Since ankles usually have a specific size ration to the rest of the body...
The poem was very fitting. Anyways, 100,000 page views is amazing. Great job and best of luck.

The trick here is to find out her height to weight ratio, and to just focus on losing that.
A 16' Takai will still weigh about eight times more than a normal Takai. Thus the constant measuring. We have to keep track of it all, now, don't we? ^_^

Okay, I'm back. ^___^
Almost as much as the gorgeous picture, I really enjoyed both the poem and the moving speech you wrote to commemorate this most momentous occasion. Indeed, congratulations to you and Takai-san for finding each other, for helping one another grow personally, and for discovering such a helpful and supportive community. Thank you for sharing this story of love, openness and honesty with us all -- I wish you both nothing but eternal happiness! 'v'
=============
Now as for the picture itself, whereas my gift pic is a small sample of what you can do with vector graphics, I think of this image as a perfect example of why you should NOT consider vector graphics at all (or at least anymore than you currently employ them). I've said this before, but the speed and convenience of the vector form comes at the cost of detail, nuance and that "natural" touch that only a hand-drawn tool can provide, as evidenced by the beautiful streaking effect in Takai-san's hair. It's not entirely impossible to replicate that in vector form, but it would certainly be harder and more impractical. I'm not sure how long you took doing this picture (it sounded like Takai-san had to help "push" you along in some instances... ^.^), but I can assure you that several of the special effects you employed, such as that hair streaking and the gentle soft-shading on her elbows and legs, are a lot faster (and a lot more fun) to do by hand. ^^
Fun is important, and from the cute expression on Takai-san's face, your own stumped (or just deep-in-mathematical-thought) expression while looking at the tape measurement, the use of the incredibly effective low-angle shot, and the undeniable size disparity in your mutual shoe sizes, is more than enough evidence for me that this wonderful drawing was simply a BLAST to draw. ^___^
I felt the same when i did your gift pic, which is why I also managed to get it done fairly quickly. When you have fun drawing something, you end up with masterful works like these dripping with ingenious detail and professional art techniques.
If you need any evidence for why I've always admired both your works, then I think it's safe to say you're staring at it! ^v^
I do have one question though....
It sounded from the description that Takai-san did help you with certain elements of the picture, either artistically or with research or what not. Unless I'm sticking my snout where it don't belong, and if it's not too much trouble, I think I'd love to hear about her own contributions to this masterpiece. ^^

Wow, I must say, this is quite the comment!
First, I'll answer your question, in that yes, Takai helped me a lot with this picture. When I was coloring/designing her uniform, she provided me of some reference pictures from when she was on her high-school sports team. Then, later on, she encouraged me to do a background. So I went and did it, and even though I was completely underwhelmed by the results, I had admitted defeat, and was fully prepared to submit it. She got me back working on it though, and showed that it wasn't just in my head, that background did suck. So I moved some colors around, added some backgrounds, and she coached me through it and told me what she thought needed to change. You would be looking at a much sadder piece of art were she not there to assist me.
Typically, Takai will provide me with ideas, reference pictures, modeling, color suggestions, and the ever-necessary kicking my lazy butt to finish something right. ^_^
Now, I guess I can understand your point... There are certain things that I do in raster that simply aren't plausible in a vector format. Still, it's been ages since I did any vector coloring, I think it would be fun to give it a go.
You're right though- pictures I have fun on are just exciting to work on, and this one was definitely fun. I'm glad you noticed the dramatic difference in our shoe sizes, that was really one of my favorite little details. Really, when it comes right down to it, I love comparison shots, and I always try to have some kind of interaction on that level.
Anyhow, to make a long comment longer - Thank you very much for such kind words. I really appreciated hearing them. ^___^

You were nice enough to comment at length about my gift pic, so it's only right that I returned the favor. Glad it worked out nicely. ^^
Also happy to see Takai-san was quite deeply involved in this picture. I can vouch for the power of collaborative efforts, since some of my best works that I'm proud of were in fact joint efforts between myself and one of my close art friends at my Club . ^__^
I might suggest blending that paragraph into the picture comment above, since I feel it enhances the sense of partnership between you. ^^
I got from your other works that you seem particularly fond of foot comparisons, and seeing as you're quite honest about it I guess I'll confess I'm in the exact same boat. ^^'
That being said, I'll also rant a little about my perceived impression that those kinds of comparisons are surprisingly rare across all spectrums of media. Even among the exciting macrophilic harem anime I mentioned, only Kanokon ever dares show who's bigger. And that's not even spoken -- as a purely incidental detail, you have to have your finger hovering over the Pause button. ^^'
The other series either avoid the comparison with religious zeal or distort the truth through the amazing magic of Inconsistent Artwork™. I'm starting to believe that this style of comparison is considered some kind of strange, unspoken taboo or something. ^___^'
Luckily, your work embodies the time-honored and VERY truthful adage: "If you want something done right, you gotta do it yourself." ^v^

chibiBiscuit In reply to C-quel [2009-02-12 16:55:19 +0000 UTC]
Really, I'm a huge fan of comparisons in any case. The noticeable difference in scale between two figures just makes a really eye-catching silhouette, and I love anytime direct comparisons are included- (back to back, foot to foot, etc.) It's definitely true that the last few pictures I have done have seemed to have some kind of emphasis on the shoe region, which I think is interesting, now that I notice it. I don't have a foot fetish, but it does seem rather prevalent in my artwork.
Ugh. Nothing peeves me more than size indiscrepancies in anime. If someone is shown as one head taller than their peers in one shot, it becomes very noticeable to me when two scenes later they're looking said friends in the eye.
