richard is a farseer in the employ of the east india company and har har your jokes about a farseer with no depth perception are incredibly funny and he has never heard them before >.| he got promoted from working on the indiamen to having a nice desk job around bombay after he lost his eye and his swordmaster in an action at sea, at which point they gave him tilly to be his new swordmaster, rather against both of their wills, possibly because they don’t actually like richard all that much because he is a dick

tilly is neev’s and is a small delicate decorative creature not unlike a parrot. in other incarnations he is a psyker but he makes a good swordmaster and he and richard resent one another so much

the setting is stolen wholecloth from astolat’s excellent master & commander au fic duende which i suggest to anyone who might be interested in age of sail magical realism with lots of magically-induced homolust, no knowledge of the aubrey/maturin series necessary for enjoyment
