It's hard to say where in the story this falls exactly but a couple of things could lead to this incident. Two at the top of the list are a confrontation with Hamburglar or mutant Officer BigMac.Suffice to say our beloved clown almost gets crushed. As he sits in shocked silence, ringing in his ears and chest heaving with panicked breaths he realizes...He just can't do this.
