I'd say it's less of a size fetish thing (which is already getting more representation anyway) and more of a shout out to Kikaiju\Giant Monsters then anything else. Which is cool in of itself.
Pokemon did do a giant person once anyway, in Black 2\White 2 with the movie section and the giant lady.
