UPDATE!: part 2 has been written uwuDinner Date [part 2] (part 1 in desc)
Cass stood in front of the mirror and squinted hard at his reflection. He'd brought out a few cute-looking outfits he didn't often wear, but as he held each one up he scrunched up his nose at how it looked on him. He wanted to wear something that looked nice, hoping that it might make him slightly more appealing, however he hated how he looked in everything and eventually settled for something he knew he was at least comfortable wearing. Cupid had called through his door a few times, asking if he was alright. The smaller deer, he knew, was wearing one of his dress shirts. He had no issues sharing clothes, but for some reason the thought of it bit at him slightly.
"Sorry, sweets." he replied after throwing a loose sweater over his head, "I'm almost ready now."
He slid on some shoes and hurried to the door, then paused, turned and grabbed his eyepatch.
"Why'd you take so long?" Cupid asked with a confused smile, "You're usually quick to change."
"A rare moment of indecisiveness." Cass shrugged with a small smile. He wasn't lying.
Cupid giggled and looked him up and down, "It's cute." he smiled as he glanced over the outfit, "I don't know why but I was expecting more.. ribbons and lace."
Cass laughed and rocked back on his heels, "It was one of my ideas." he admitted, blocking out the image of himself in front of the mirror, "Though I think it suits you more than me." he added before he realized what he'd said. Cupid blushed slightly and thanked him, then the two took their coats and set off.
The restaurant was modest, but still nicely decorated. Cass asked for a table, and a surprised employee quickly led them to a vacant area. The two thanked her and took the menus she offered, but neither looked down immediately.
"It's quite nice here." Cass remarked, glancing across the walls, "If the food's good too I might be here every week." he added in a hushed tone. Cupid giggled,
"Will I be invited?" he asked, "Maybe we could bring Marshall too, next time." he suggested, innocently enough. Cass felt a cold prick in his chest at the mention of the wolf, but didn't let himself falter,
"Yes, of course." he nodded, "I'm sure he'd like it here too." he stopped looking around to take a peek at the menu, and Cupid did the same. There was a long pause, and Cass glanced over the menu to Cupid. The smaller deer didn't seem to realize, so he lowered his head again. Suddenly none of the food seemed particularly appetizing, and he questioned himself as to why he'd chosen to go for a meal instead of just being upfront. Worse still, that was the advice Marshall had given. Granted, Marshall didn't know who his mysterious crush was, but if Cass knew one thing, it was that Cupid loved everything about the wolf. He reminded himself of this constantly, and couldn't help but feel inferior.
"What are you having, do you think?" Cupid asked suddenly, and Cass jumped. The smaller deer giggled and pulled the menu closer to cover his face, which Cass thought was incredibly cute. So cute, in fact, that it made his cheeks flush.
"I.. uhm.." the younger deer paused and looked back down. He didn't really want anything. "maybe just.. a burger."
"A burger?!" Cupid repeated and lowered the menu, smiling wide, almost in disbelief, "There's nothing else you like?" he asked, laughing again,
"I-I mean.." Cass paused to look at the menu again, "Well, what are you having?" he shot back, smiling.
"I haven't decided yet." Cupid admitted, "Maybe I'll have a burger too." he teased.
The two laughed and let the conversation graduate to another topic, then their server appeared to ask what they'd like. Having still not decided, Cass decided he might as well have the burger, and to his surprise, Cupid ordered the same thing.
"Well now you can't say anything." Cass grinned, "burger-boy." he giggled and leaned across the table,
"Hey, if anyone's a 'burger-boy' it's you." the smaller deer argued while laughing, "That was like, the only thing you looked at." he pointed out. Cass wanted to argue that he'd actually been a bit preoccupied looking at something else, but said nothing and threw his hands up in defeat instead. With the menus gone, there was no longer anything to hide behind, and the younger deer began to grow more and more uncomfortable. He'd asked Cupid out to dinner for a reason, though he had no idea how to bring it up. Everything always seemed to involve Marshall, and as much as Cass loved the wolf, he was making it incredibly difficult for the deer to say what he wanted.
"By the way." Cupid tilted his head, "Where'd this shirt even come from?" he asked, raising an arm and flapping the sleeve around, "It's huge." he laughed.
"That one, uh.." Cass lowered an eyebrow, "I can't remember. Either a souvenir or sad day." he shrugged, then the two laughed again,
"Do you seriously take something from every guy?" the smaller deer asked, leaning forward on his elbows, "You came back with that ring once, right?"
"Not.. every time." Cass insisted, "And with regards to that one; I asked." he lowered his head and smirked, "Not like he could really say 'no', though."
Cupid giggled again, and their server returned with their drinks. Cass took a sip of his lemonade and gazed just past Cupid. The smaller deer raised a questioning eyebrow and glanced over his shoulder,
"Is someone there?" he asked, having seen nothing unusual,
"No, sorry." the younger deer shook his head, "I just didn't wanna look directly at you."
"Why not?" Cupid furrowed his eyebrows, "You've seen enough of me already?"
Cass laughed, "No, of course not." he flicked his eyes back to Cupid, "Just, I feel like staring at someone makes 'em uncomfortable." he shrugged. Cupid flashed a confused smile, then took a slow sip of his drink,
"Another 'by the way'." he said, "I know you say you're alright, but like.. You've been so different recently." he paused to have another sip, "Like, not yourself at all."
Cass tilted his head slightly, "Really? Don't worry about it." he shook his head slightly and looked down at the table. He was absolutely not fine. He was hopelessly in love, which wouldn't really be a problem if the person he liked wasn't clearly infatuated with someone else.
Cupid leaned forward, holding his hand across the table, "Something's wrong, Cass. You can tell me later if you like, but don't act like you're fine."
The younger deer looked up, cheeks turning red almost automatically, "No, I, uhm." He struggled, then released a long breath, "To be honest, I brought you out here so I could talk about it."
Cupid didn't say anything, but nodded and shifted forward in his seat, returning his hands to the glass.
"It's just.." Cass paused, secretly hoping their food would arrive and all would be forgotten, but alas, he was instead prompted to continue.
"I.." he paused again, but only briefly, "First of all, I just wanna say that I know I'm not.. anything like Marshall." he explained, lowering his head. Already, he felt a cold sensation in his chest, but he forced himself to carry on, "And I know.. You like him a lot.." he continued, voice cracking partway through the statement.
"Has something happened between you..?" Cupid asked, clearly concerned, "You haven't had an argument, right..?"
"No." Cass laughed pathetically and shook his head, feeling something hot in his eyes, "We're still the same. I'm not really talking about Marshall though.." he lowered his voice and poked at the straw in his glass.
"Then who?"
"I just.." Cass realized all of a sudden that he was crying, and sniffed, "It's you, Cupid." he whispered, "I know you don't feel the same way and.. I respect that. I'm sorry.." he blinked hard, trying to eradicate the tears but failing.
"Cass, what's the matter?" Cupid asked, placing a hand on top of the younger deer's again, "What about me?"
"I.." Cass shook, desperately trying to hold it together, "I guess it's like.. the same as you and Marshall.." he tried to explain, "I feel that way about you."
Cupid was quiet for a long moment, and Cass felt a hot wave of shame engulf him. He stood abruptly and apologized, then hurried to the toilets, covering his face. He almost ran into the server who, with cruelly perfect timing, was bringing their order.
