The ink shader, my favourite! I made about 30 different of these black and white images, so I'll try to update this later with some of the best ones in case you want to try something similar. basically though you need to create a perfect circle on a square canvas and draw in whatever highlight shape you want. Once you project it on the character yo can see if it has the effect you wanted and adjust if necessary.
I loved this method honestly, it gave such nice results for highlights.
