Description
Still learning things about markers every time I work. Such as a saturation limit. Especially if you work with Prismacolor, the black ink is a bit different from every other ink. At some point, if you layer it too much, it won't be absorbed by the paper any more and you get streaks like you see here. from anywhere other than straight on, the light doesnt catch it, but it's nicely visible here in the scan. Things like that drive me bananna sandwich.Anyways, a 90's classic created by the beast known as Sam Kieth. I always wanted to take a crack at him, so this was a cool one to work on.
Prismacolor cool grey and white paint on vellum bristol board.

This is great! I love how his bulbous muscles are just tearing through his skin. That's a great effect. Nicely done on the shading too. Brilliant!

Thanks. That's meant to just be battle damage in his suit. Keith loved to draw shredded fabric and that was my nod to that.

Sick brother! So how many shades of marker is this, was it like a grey set of colors or something?

Thanks. Yeah, I use every shade in the book in my work. There's 10 including black.

Man, it looks great. Those markers aren't cheap though are they?
I'm working on my lighting and shading for my first comic I've got to do. I hope I'm able to at least try and do something simular in shading in PS. I'm going to be "attempting" to do mt first comic which will be black and white (cut down on printing cost.)
Thanks for doing such awesome and inspirational work! ;D

Yeah, markers can be pretty expensive. Especially if you're trying to do full comic pages with them. Copics are the cheaper option, but I just prefer the Prismacolor.

Fiddling with Levels in PS doesn't help remove the streaks?

Nah. About the only thing I could do is digitally paint it out, but I want my scans to be raw...warts and all.

Fantastic version of an all-time personal favorite! Really great sense of form with the marker work!!
I think Maxx was one of the best examples of what Image was meant to be - something unlike what the "Big Two" would have published at the time.

with every piece you do it becomes harder to tell what is lighter marker and what is painted or tinted with colored pencil. It all blends so perfectly. I think someone said your style is like marker painting...seems to sum it up.

Thanks. It actually is a marker painting so that fits hehe. I haven't used color pencil in a long time, but have started to again. This one doesn't have any though.

chriss2d ...
You did a FANTASTIC job on this. Seriously dude.
Well done. Well done indeed.
Love the amount of shading in this piece. At first glance, I thought that this was a digital rendering due to the grey tones having been blended so nicely.
Was SHOCKED to see that it was done using Prismacolour pens instead.
Keep up the good work and you'll have no need for banana sandwiches affecting you anymore.
Peace out,

Thanks. Yeah, black is weird sometimes, but it was layering it too much that really screwed me. It was looking ok until I decided to go a little darker with one more pass. Live and learn.
