Description
My first acrylic painting. Cool! Technically my second. I did an awesome Flash painting when I was 14 or 15. So awesome that this is the first time I've touched acrylics since.I dont really know why I've always been afraid of paint, but I have. The recent work I've been doing with watercolor has shaken some of that fear and made me curious. Plus, these days my biggest inspirations havent come from comics like they always have before but from painters like Frazetta and Jeff Jones, so this was something I really felt like doing finally.
This was just an exercise just to see what it was like to really paint and I have to say I enjoyed it. I didnt make any effort to plan it out or concern myself with details and it was fun. I didnt draw anything first, (mainly because I dont know how to do that yet) so the image here was just worked in as I went. In a way, it's liberating to not know what the hell youre doing. This was done with two paints. Burnt Umber and white. It's essentially a greyscale piece that I used brown on instead of black.
Liquitex acrylic on canvas.

Oh, neat! It has a very Ashley Wood feel to it, but with better definition.

Thanks, yeah its pretty there ain't it? Didn't plan that, but he is an influence so I guess it's expected. The robot doesn't help hehe. Robots make great subjects though.

I need to take a lesson from you here and dive in and just do something. I'm so afraid of sucking that I usually just end up not doing anything at all. If that is your second acrylic painting, wow. Its really cool. I want to know how to paint and use different media, but I can't get myself to try.
Ok, here goes...

Thanks. Yeah, just go for it. I had the same fear for years, but ultimately, I decided you'll never get better at something you don't even attempt. I already learned some things from this one try that I can apply to the next one. That first step is the hardest.

looks cool, I have always loved acrylics for their versatility. I think that the brown tone behind the figure is a bit distracting since it seems like the only area of the painting where you didn't mix any white into the brown so it really jumps out...the focus would stay on the robot even more if you filled in that area with a mixed tone...just my opinion, take it or not
If you want to get an idea on how to draw things out first, you can see that part on this clip from Greg Manchess's great video tutorial. [link]

No, I agree. I just liked the weird wood grain texture it had and decided not to analyze anything on this first try too much.
Thanks for the tip. Manchess is a great painter.

Tomorrow is my first painting session. I hope I do well. I am scared since I am having a bad time with shadows and form. I have never taken a basic drawing class which I think is killing me. I basically started drawing a year ago when I took a figure drawing class. Your painting is really nice. I hope I do well.

Good luck! I sometimes think it's a good thing to just dive into the deep end without all the baggage that years of experience can bring. The results can be less self aware and honest that way sometimes.

Thanks, Teo. Yeah, it's the one medium I always wanted to dive into, but never did. Now, I wish I'd started sooner.

I didn't like the strong texture you get with canvas at first, but it's growing on me. The texture is more subtle as you layer the paint on too. Cool stuff.

I can't wait to get started on some. I'll be taking classes with Heron Art School this summer and fall, so hopefully I can get some practice in before then.

My pleasure. I hope to have a series of these showing the growing pains. Paid work comes first, so it may take a while.
