Description
And so a new journey begins as this here serves as a terminal for the crossing over of one year for another ( also makes a good wallpaper too ) and I actually stayed up to make sure I pressed "submit" as soon as the clock rolled over to 2008 lol ( Australian time dont forget )As for the artwork itself, well even though it was more time-consuming than most, I really havn't got a deep concept for this one. Just a good o'l sci-fi / terraspace scene. It could be considered to be the successor to Lightyear which has a similar theme, and made to celebrate the same event. For its time, that one was way above my usual standards, and I like to think the same about this one too. I was forced to do better in hope that it could gain admission to ~TerraSpace 's new pack...the first that is open to anyone who feels they have a chance of making it in. Wish me luck, and Happy new year to everybody !
The rights to this artwork has already been purchased. The customer allowed me to keep it in my gallery purely for display purposes. I'm afraid this one isn't for sale. Please do not use my images without permission

The nebula's here are the typical "cluster of stars surrounded by cloudy gas" but rather they contain thick, sharp-edged dust clouds like those seen in the Eagle nebula [link] Though I just need more practice making it look like that. Another good example that used no stock photo's at all is this deviation [link] which the artist painted from scratch like I did here.
I try to have different variety and styles of nebula between each space art, I get bored when I see the same type too often.

If you are referring to the large sphere its heading to, thats a planet. In case you get confused, a planet is an actual, solid object that can be landed on ( except the massive gas-planets...but theres none here ) A star is a burning ball of gas that sending a mission to would be foolish lol. The closest star here would be that blue one in the top-left

Yeah, I wante dthis one very festive and active, just like the new year is...Can you beleive that planet with the lights on it was going to have rings? I got rid of the rings because even I thought that was too much lol.
Oh well, my next probably won't be so overdone.

A bit late with this, but I love how many things are going on in this. In a normal picture, maybe it's a bit overbearing; the general theme shouldn't be sacrificed. However, a wallpaper is something you look at for hopefully a very long time. I think this is a great piece, and I'm currently using it (unless I find another one of yours I like more, as this is the first one I've looked at). In any case, I really love the theme. I'm a particular fan of outer space shots.

Thanks man, I used to be the kind who changed his wallpaper every day. But now I keep the same one for weeks, or even months. So for those who are like me, I make sure its good enough to have a lasting impact every time their screen shows up

I remember seeing the black and white, in-progress version of this a few weeks back, and I was very excited to see it finished (despite my not being a huge sci-fi fan - though I do enjoy the genre from time to time). This is just a beautiful piece. I especially love the planet to the right. The way the light is hitting it is perfect, and I am partial to the ringed lights of (what I assume are) the civilisations upon the planet. Nicely rendered. A job well done. Keep it up.

Thanks for the great comment, I too hardly ever watch sci-fi movies or play the games as I'm not a big fan myself, I just like space for its natural beauty that can't be found on Earth. I guess my other art categories have the same back story, I sometimes make fan-art depictiong characters from games I don't really like, but I do it anyway because I just enjoy drawing them
And yeah, those lights are a sign of a much bigger civilisation than what humans have ( for now ) I was thinking they might be the pathways to a high-speed transportation system...Reach the other side of the planet in mere hours lol !

The lines are alien city lights. Kinda like a classic style sci-fi scenario. They could be a network of high-speed transport areas. I know they aren't great, but I just wanted to do something I havn't done before.

You can tell you've improved. However, I'm confused as to why you selected 'Critique Discouraged' - it's a nice art piece, but surely you're open to a few suggestions?

Chromattix In reply to PlasmaX7 [2008-01-01 04:48:34 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, it's just that like the other "special event" deviations, I want to leave them as they are. I will put the comments back to the default settings then, I don't want to change this one, but I can use the advice in future deviations I suppose.

PlasmaX7 In reply to Chromattix [2008-01-01 07:46:35 +0000 UTC]
That's what I often say.
As for this deviation - I was merely going to remark that the nebula could adhere to the colours of the star a little more, and the city light could appear a little more 'broken up', in order to give them a little more realism. That's as coherent as I can be at 3am after New Year's celebrations.

Chromattix In reply to PlasmaX7 [2008-01-01 11:51:13 +0000 UTC]
Well...I will think about breaking the rules this time, as that dosn't sound too hard to do. I must also say that I only keep the psd files for all my art for a while after finishing it. But if no critique arrives by the time I submit my next one, I delete the psd file of the previous one...They just take up way too much space. So I could do that.
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
PlasmaX7 In reply to Chromattix [2008-01-01 15:07:04 +0000 UTC]
I don't think I could do that... though I guess it helps to save disk space and would force you to move on and create new things. I just love tweaking my psds on occasion.
I wasn't suggesting that you change this piece... just use the critique to better future works.
Oh, and I realised that I really like that rocket.

Chromattix In reply to PlasmaX7 [2008-01-02 00:19:41 +0000 UTC]
Yeah, well I have started my next deviation ( not a space one...sorry ). And with a space contest announced a day after I submitted this, maybe I should just drop it and move on so after I finish the next, I can get to work on that.
Glad you like the rocket. Since I am not the kind who is good at man-made machinery, I just wanted something small and simple to show that there is some intelligent life here

Well...I wouldn't say every deviation outdoes the last. I have some slack moments too. But the general direction for all artists is upwards.
My next peice?...don't get too hyped up ( its fan-art ) I havn't done that in a while. I will top it with a cool space or landscape scene to make up for it lol.
