Description
A man-made Solar System, fully functional or just a hologram? - it's up to the viewerThis evolved significantly and is evidence on how gaining outside opinions really can improve an artwork. But the biggest help came from *SomniCelestia who suggested this steep and dynamic perspective...beforehand, my theme was still in the right place but the angle was straight-on and pretty boring. I think I need not only think outside the box when it comes to concept, but perspective too. I'll just have to see
All models made by me in Cinema 4D, imported to Vue where they were textured, lighted and rendered (blurred reflections made the base render take friggi'n 26 hours to render
P.S - in the off chance someone buys a print, it can potentially be hung upside-down too for a different perspective of the same scene

Excellent image. The asteroid belt is a great touch.
Ever read Terry Pratchett's Strata? [link]

Havn't heard of that until now, but that's actually an interesting concept, especially the part about the planting of fake fossils withing the layers of Earth. And believe me - sometimes I consider making an image of a "flat Earth" too based on ancient beliefs...why not, I've already made a star-shaped sun
Those asteroids are actually just plain o'l Vue rocks used in an ecosystem on a hollow-centered disk with an "invisible" material...The asteroid disk was rendered seperately with the Solar System and imposed back where it belonged in between the machinery in Photoshop (the whole thing is all one 3D scene, but sometimes I render parts differently so I can "layer" it in PS )

Thanks for the explanation. I just read Strata it seemed an amusing coincidence someone comes up with a solar-system making machine image. The old flat earth thing is always an interesting picture idea, especially with the perpetual waterfalls at the edge.

Nah, all I was taught in the course I did was Cinema 4D...It's more learner-friendly I guess, but all the industries expect you to have a comprehensive knowledge of 3Ds Max to get anywher ein 3D from what I've seen, and since I don't - I think using 3D as a base for my digital paintings will probably be as far as my 3D will ever take me

These one sinvolve some 3D in it, which is hard to learn without a teacher (like I had) but once you get the hang of it it can be a time-saver sometimes, especially where perspective and lighting are concerned that's one way I was able to get such interesting perspective

Man, that is AWESOME!
Great concept and marvelous idea, matthew. And unbelievable artistic skills too, I'm impressed as always.
But is it our own solar system ? If yes, you forgot Mars, Neptune, and Uranus.. :3
Anyway, this pic is win, for sure.

As usual, freaking amazing dood!
I await your next post with great anticipation!!
Love the colours the sense of movement is very well done and the scale is spot on I feel . Its very sci-fi and I love it (u know i love my scifi!! ).
In the interest of being constructive ..I would have put a tiny bit more white-ish glow on that sun. But thats neither here or there..
Well done !!

Lol, don't get too excited about my next deviation, it will be another futile character attempt so I'm glad this makes up for two deviatiosb according to your response
I feel the scale had to be exaggerated actually just to stop the planets from being microscopic
but glad you liked it, I'm also oddly a fan of dim suns too

Nie image-I doesn't even look 3D anymore-more 2D illustration now.
I ought to say that you could have easily rendered that in C4D in less than 26hours
I like to think of the system as VR, since the sun is obviously far too small
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
Chromattix In reply to DudQuitter [2009-09-28 04:02:00 +0000 UTC]
I actually found it quite hard to determine where it should go into the 3D or 2D digital art category, it's had quite a bit of work from both ends but the 3D still dominated over the 2D here, but I'll admit not by that much
Only thing that stopped me from rendering it in C4D alone is that I preferred Vue's material capabilities and how the lighting types are easier to handle in the atmosphere editor too. I tried lighting it in C4D and while it was reasonably good - I liked this version more
Yeah, to keep the sun in proportion the planets would have to be microscopic so I had to bend the rules a bit here

DudQuitter In reply to Chromattix [2009-09-29 21:17:44 +0000 UTC]
I'm growing to love C4D's render engine, I've just tried the new R11.5 and it's amazing-you can easily set up ecosystem like things with billions of polys and have it render in minutes with the new render instancing and bucket renders. I always use GI lighting and HDRI anyway-either faked HDRI maps or real so lighting has never been a problem that I can't then fix in PS afterwards.

Aww, this picture makes me kind of sad. Humans really have overtaken everything good in nature, haven't they?
Let's hope this never comes to pass.
Although I must say, the picture itself is very good. Nice command of colors. But the belt of asteroids sort of seems a bit...jpeg-ish to me. Maybe just my computer screen?

Chromattix In reply to SpookyMoonlight [2009-09-26 02:44:21 +0000 UTC]
Well, I think we'll be long dead before everything becomes artificial...if that makes you feel any better Here I did want it to look rather pretty in terms of colours though
the asteroids are very small so they would appear a little crappy in this small view - the print size is a much higher resolution though

ohmy this is most amazing! It makes you feel kinda small... and its kinda like what if our world was like this and we didn't know?in a sense it is because God is like the machine creating and sustaining our universe but machines aren't capable of love ^^ great picture lol

I was almost going to call this "Artificial God" or something along those lines since I was thinking similar to what you said but yes - machines are great but they can't love (so maybe God is a machine after all
