Description
This was my first real attempt at realism, made this with a field guide to raptors of the world, and several of my store-bought toys to help me.I have to figure out a better way to get it to stand on its own. I know the leg/tail configuration is a bit wonky, and will fix that next time to get it to balance better. The tail should probably be a bit longer too.
Otherwise, I'm very pleased with this guy, he perches proudly on my desk and glares at me while I study.

He's fantastic! You did really, really well. To fix the balance issue, I suggest making a nice, stiff armature using pliers and coat hanger wire (tape the ends) and/or enlarging the talons and stuffing them very firmly. Or you could try filling the feet with plushie plastic beads to create a balancing weight.
He just looks fabulous, the detail around the eyes and on the beak is particularly good.

Thank you for your comment and advice, I really appreciate it. He does have wire in his legs and tail but I used loops of beading wire which weren't as stiff as I wanted. I hadn't thought of using coathangers. His feet are stuffed to the max. The problem is in his hips, he tends to splay his legs. Next time I will try using coat hangers to keep the joints stiff. I've always wanted to try beads but haven't been able to find them easily.
I really did enjoy making the details on this one. Thanks again.

Ah, you tried the same thing I did the first time Coathangers are good if you aren't wanting it to be especially poseable as it doesn't manipulate well. Poseable plushies need that store-bought, plastic coated stuff that I refuse to tinker with yet. If his hips are where he is going wrong, maybe try a little needle-sculpting? Use some strong thread and work back and foth, from one side to the other then back again, to pull them together tighter?
He's still completely gorgeous as he is!

That's really cool!
I love how you've made the feathers. They look so realistic and the placement is totally perfect.
Great job at detailing the toes and face as well. I need to get some of those glass eyes myself; they look so cool.

Thank you I really enjoyed trying to get the details right on this one.
I love those eyes too, these ones are plastic and really cheap. Where I am you can get a packet of 10 for $5.
