Description
Diner Days of a Better TimeBy: Charles Phillips
Here I am
Doing the same thing
I do every morning
I read the paper
start in the sports section
not like I understand what I'm reading
Then the Business section
same result as the sports
fallowed by the only sections
I understand
first the funnies
then the Obituaries
mainly to see if know anyone in there
I order my usual
Dry Wheat Toast
Belgium Waffle
Strawberries on top
Four slices of Bacon
crispy near burnt
and Coffee
the Blacker the better
Then I see it
I see her name,
and picture
still as pretty as the day we met
that night in the rain
that night I first saw love
and watched it in my rear view mirror
I feel the wheel in my hands
the leather of my new courser
the smell of the rubber as I sped
I can still hear the music
that same old song
that one that melted your heart
and made you mine
your hair pulled back in a tight low hanging bun
your intoxicating laughter
even that cute snort
you thought was embarrassing
the sweet perfume you wore
still haunts my nostrils
like the scent of a fresh baked pie on a windowsill
That was the same night your parents
wouldn't let you leave until I met them
I was scared shitless
but it was worth it
worth it to watch you walk down the stairs
wondering when time would start again
The feel of your soft skin touching mine
our fingers interwoven
feeling you inch closer
then you finally placing your head on my shoulder
as I put my hand on your waist
your eyes shining under the glow of the movie screen
that peacefulness I've never felt again
The car ride home
holding hands the whole way
only stopping when I pulled over to pick you wild flowers
I still remember their smell
and the look of confusion as I pulled over
and of love when I handed you the bouquet
that was poorly put together to say the least
then driving you home
the look of disappointment
that this night had to end
the walk up to your porch stoop
we must have walked slower than a snail in molasses
then looking you in the eye
as I tried to figure out what to do
and you pulled me close
and landed one on my lips
watching you walk inside
and catching you mother
watch me do a victory dance after your door shut
and quickly running to the car
so I could get home and call
All of this ended
by my food making it to the table
so I quickly eat it
so I can get home
and look forward to when we next met
my love
You hear me Blue Fairy
