Description Everything, everywhere, and more
By: Charles Phillips

I remember the first time we met
It was a blind date
Your cousin Jessica
And my older brother Kurt
For weeks they hounded me
Telling me how much we’d get along
All that time me being stubborn
Never taking their advice
Always coming up with excuses
“I have something to do”
“I’m going to be out of time”
“I’m not ready for anything”
Little did I know
That they were right
Beyond anything we could imagine

I got to the coffee shop
Maybe 30 minutes before you
I kept trying to talk myself out of it
You made me glad I didn’t

As soon as you walked in
I know I made the right choice
When I stayed
The first thing I noticed was your height
You noticed too
I could tell it made you uncomfortable
Being taller then me
Even if the difference was only 2 inches
Then I noticed you didn’t wear much make up
Which in my previous experience meant
you either weren’t into this date
or you weren’t one to care about appearance
It really didn’t matter to me
my brain had already wrote this one
into the lose column

See I had been on so many failed dates
I started to fancy myself
a semi-pro at reading body language
Boy howdy did you prove me wrong
Something I’m so glad you did

I often go back
and revisit that date in my memory
Remembering the smirk on your face
Especially when we got on the subject of music
Our tastes couldn’t have been more different
That smirk that said
“He’s cute
but for real.”
My face couldn’t have been redder
Something I know you noticed
We talked for what felt like days
or
or like two old friends that haven’t seen each other in years
and had some serious catching up to do.

An old married couple stopped
and asked us how long we’ve been together
But before I could answer
You without hesitation said
“Our 3 year anniversary was last week.”
to which I immediately played off of with
“First night I a year we are kid free.”
Then they simply looked at us
Told us good luck with the baby
we each wished each other good evening
Then they were on their way

“Oh so we’re parents?”
you said as soon as they left
“Yes to a lovely baby girl named Claire,
she’s 18 months old,
and has her mothers beautiful eyes.”
you blushed slightly
Then I quickly apologised for going to fair
“No it was cute,
but I’m sure she’d have her fathers eyes
and my smile”

This kind of banter went on
for about another 30 minutes
or so
Then the band started playing
Without warning
You took my hands
Pulled me to the floor
I looked at your face
and knew we’d have to do this again.
