Fall and I will catch you
trip and I will laugh
give me your hand and I will gladly hold it

I can see my future in your smile

The one that I want to see
not the one we keep trying to force upon ourselves
but the one where it's you and me alone together
at least for the first two years
then maybe we can talk kids
or so you say

"I want the spot close to the wall"
you tell me again and again
like I didn't hear you the first time
but, I'm ok with you having the spot

Fall and I will catch you
trip and I will laugh
give me your hand and I will gladly hold it

I can see my future in your smile

"Let the dog in the bedroom"
another command you bark at me
I look at you like please shut up my love
The dog sits on the other side of the door
and I get no loving that night

Before you know it life changes again
we don't seem to mind that much
we don't really notice or recall
that is until the groceries are needed, laundry, or bills come in
then we not oh boy do we notice

Fall and I will catch you

I get up and change another diaper
just so you can get 10 more minutes of sleep
10 minutes until I let the oldest monsters charge in
charge in and jump on the bed

I give them very easy and direct instructions
wake mommy up by all means
minus pulling her hair
and hurting her
even if it means farting on her

I can see my future in your smile

I make breakfast
and tell you how lovely you look
you look at me and mouth the words
you're dead
which lets me know how you were woken up
and it had to stink

I smile and laugh
then I look at the picture on the fridge
the one of us in Paris
on the bridge overlooking the canal
you were the most person there that night
I can only imagine all the things I said there

give me your hand and I will gladly hold it

I can see my future in your smile

You finally come into the kitchen
after you morning rituals and 45 minutes
of taking up our only bathroom that is
but you come in and make sure the babies are locked up right
and make sure the oldest three stopping playing
at the table and eat

Then you come over and give me kiss
your soft lips make me waking up early the best
then I hand you your plate and orange juice
I sit down with take my coffee and plate too
eggs, bacon, waffles, and fresh fruit no sugar
the last part because you make me

give me your hand and I will gladly hold it

I can see my future in your smile

After the older ones are done
I send them off to watch cartoons
and tell them I'll be in there after a few
they look back and ask if I'm going to kiss mommy
and I pull you close and do
they say "gross" in unison
then watch cartoons

"Turn that down your not deaf"
I yell to them
they reply almost yelling "HUH, I can't hear you
we're deaf the TV's to loud"
I love our perfect little smart asses
I ask how you slept
and you tell me "fine" but I know you're lying

Fall and I will catch you
trip and I will laugh
give me your hand and I will gladly hold it

We feed the twins
and watch our breakfast get cold
I don't mind I'll still eat it
you know I will but you'll have to warm yours
then I look by the door
and see Regin peeking at us waiting for us to do a trick

"Baby girl please go watch cartoons"
I ask her but I know she won't
not until daddy gets up to watch ponies with her
then I watch robots and army men
those with the oldest two

Fall and I will catch you
trip and I will laugh
give me your hand and I will gladly hold it

I can see my future in your smile

I get up and kiss you more time
then I put up both our plates
yours still has one eggs on it
mine completely empty
I eat the left over egg before you notice

Then I kiss the twins
on their gross food covered foreheads
I walk over to the door way
Regin still standing there waiting patiently
I make my monster face she giggles
in her cute 3 year girl giggle

Fall and I will catch you

give me your hand and I will gladly hold it

I can see my future in your smile

I look back at you
you have that your helping me clean look
I shot you sorry I can't playing with the kids face
then I raise my arms still in monster face
and chase Regin back to the TV room
making loud monster noises the whole time

You yell "No rough Housing, Kermit has soccer at 2!"
we all yell back "YES MOTHER!"
and we go back to rough housing
stopping to watch cartoons everyone in awhile
then you stand up and separate the dishes
I cooked so you clean up
that's the rule and why I cooked

I can see my future in your smile

The kids point out your cleaning music
so I come back in while you do dishes
wrap my arms around your waist and kiss
I make sure you're holding a plate or pan
then tickle you so you drop it in the water
you slash water all over your front
I laugh and turn then shot me the death glare
I roll my eyes and say "Like that bothers me"

You wipe your soaked bubble hands on my face
and flick water on me why I shot with the spray hose
meanwhile we forgot the twins still their highchairs
we play some for little while longer
we stop because our song comes on
then I pull you close
and we slow dance like we did on our wedding night

We get interrupted by the three oldest
they're standing in the door way
they stand there and make kissing noises
well all but Regin
that's only because she doesn't know how yet
hers sound like sick bird chirping

They ask me when I'm coming back
robots is almost on
"it's the one where the bad guys finally win
or do they?"
Kermit says with odd excitement in his voice
we all know they lose
we've seen this episode more than a dozen times

Then I wake up
and I remember that's not us
it never was
that's what my mind wrote for us
and it keeps trying to make for us
even though there isn't even a us

Just you and me
me and you
not even together yet
and I have our future planned out
5 kids, 3 singles, 1 set of twins, number 6 the final kid a few years away
house in the close suburbs to a city
2 dogs, 1 cat, 1 guinea pig or hamster not sure yet
that's what I want
So I say again for the last time
