Description A male Long-tailed Duck Clangula hyemalis  in breeding plumage.  This large seaduck species has eye rings somewhat like the Spectacled Eider, a far more flashy seaduck.  However, he's still a handsome drake in his own right.  Found in arctic seas, the Long-tailed Duck is listed as vulnerable by the IUCN due to drastic declines recorded in the wintering population.  Loss of adequate breeding habitat in the arctic and increased nest depredation are among the reasons for their decline.  This individual is part of a breeding program at a private facility that supports endangered waterfowl, among other birds.
