“The dark clouds rolled across the grey sky. It will rain soon. Beating my wings against the humid air, I hovered, looking for a good place to land and wait out the incoming downpour. I flew over the lazy Serpent-Tongue River snaking through the parched foothills below and alighted down among the old willows and cottonwoods that edged it. Between the trees on the far side of the river she could see the Barrens stretch out for seemingly forever. Despite the thunder that roared overhead and the sound of the leaves clashing like an arena of applause, it was quite peaceful.”
