Description So it goes without saying that in a fantasy world that was based on a feudal one, there would be nobility of all reach and manner beyond just the daimyo.
However unlike the real world, there's much more in the way of social mobility because otherwise things would be rather dull. It's hard to have tales of rising heroes and such if no one can actually go up the ladder, especially if there isn't one to climb.
As for Advent From Elsewhere, the nobility down from daimyo and up from peasant are something more like high ranking civil servants; business owners with wide reach and several connections, the heads of record keeping archives, artists, and so on.
Granted during wartime many of these individuals would likely serve as higher ranking officers, overseeing things like logistics and such, being pulled into the needs of the state but not forced straight onto the front lines, and earning another way in which they can rest on their laurels come peace time.
But it isn't wartime. The region is in a state of peace and has been for a while, so the only ones sitting pretty in nobility because of their service have been out of it for a while. That isn't to say the provinces don't have a standing army with competent officers, generals, and daimyo, far from it, but many of the ones from the last conflict took to retirement and let the new guard inherit the duties of being a soldier. As such, a solid share of the current noble crop, at various levels, are just retired fighters.
As for the non-wardogs, many of the new nobles come from the civilian world, as shone above. Retired veterans might drift into those roles, applying their wartime skills into commercial pursuits (a former logistician will leverage their skills and former position to become a merchant guild leader, a unit captain becomes head of the city/town guard, etc.), stepping sideways as it were. Where as for ordinary, non-samurai folk, it really is just a matter of stepping up, be that on their own skills or faking it till they make it.
A noble can earn their way to the top through things like guilds, simple promotions and uplifts, or being a daimyo or other noble's functionary, but it isn't uncommon for them to exploit their way into high society. Often times this comes in the form of simply buying their way in somewhere, independent of something like a guild, or otherwise exploiting the image of high class (again, fake it till you make it).
Then there are more...physical means, and given that it's a time of peace, that doesn't mean assassinations. Or at least, those are far and away the minority method...
