BASIC INFO
Name: Nopal
Nickname/s: N/A
Age: 22
Gender: Female
Pronouns: She/Her They/Them
GENERAL
Hometown: Paniola Town
Relationship status: Single / Not particularly looking
Personality:
+ Nopal's personality seems to revolve around her desire to help people, and she's always ready to lend a hand or a smile when needed. She's steadfastly loyal, typically calm under pressure, and while her hands are rough with use she's always careful to be gentle. She makes the conscious choice to trust people and take their word face value- this isn't to say that she's gullible, but she'll always put her faith in other people while they haven't proven themselves unworthy of it. Even then, she's likely to give a few more chances before she gives up on them.
- Can be stubborn to a fault, and despite doing her best to understand and react appropriately to other people's feelings and actions she can be very, very oblivious; especially so when she interacts with one person often enough. While she's been working on it for a long time and is much better about controlling it, she has a fairly short temper and can, will, and has suplexed a man through a bar table; she's more familiar with street brawls than pokemon battles, though she's a few years out of practice throwing fists, it's still one of her first instincts.

HISTORY
Her name hadn't always been Nopal.
She'd had a quiet childhood, all things considered. She was an only child working on her parents' farm since she could really understand the concept of work, and probably before that, too. Her parents weren't terrible by any means, but they weren't exactly good, and unless she was needed to repair a fence or help herd in the tauros she was often left disconnected from her family and to her own devices. She went to school, briefly, and she was friendly enough with the other kids who lived on the farms to all sides of the wire fences, but she never really made friends with anyone: none that stuck, anyway. She was a self-entertaining child, who talked too long and too loud at anyone who even seemed like they'd listen to her, and as she grew older and her workload got larger she couldn't make sense of the knot of angry emotions she seemed to carry around with her. How could something have gone wrong, she thought, if everything was still exactly the same as it always had been?
She wouldn't be able to pinpoint when she'd started going down a dark road; there was no explosive arguments with her parents, no shouting matches and slammed doors, just more and more cold silence and awkward dinners, clipped conversations and the chill of loneliness that no amount of blankets could dissipate. Akala's a big island, but it's still an island: there's nowhere to go, after a while. Just the dark, reaching expanse of the ocean and the maddening silence of her own thoughts. She idealized running away a lot, before she really knew what the concept meant, but she always came back in the end. There was always more work to be done, after all, so she carved out a sliver of time from the moon and tried her best to live in the hours between sunset and sunrise. She'd never been a trainer- never gotten any kind of licence beyond what was needed to raise ride and livestock pokemon- but it never stopped her from seeking out the more shady battling arenas that went under the radar. She didn't want to battle pokemon- any dreams she'd had of being a pokemon master were pressed out of her at a young age, if she'd had them at all- and her problems had never been with pokemon, always people. There's plenty of places for two humans to battle it out if someone knows where to look. She blamed an awful lot of bruises on the tauros, those days, even practiced how she'd tell someone she fell from the back of a mudsdale, off the fence, down the stairs, if anyone asked. They never did, and in the depths of her anger and grief she's pretty sure she liked the bruises because it meant someone would just touch her, would prove to her that she was there, that she existed; but she only really figured it out in hindsight.
Nothing came to a head, really. There was no final straw, or one day too much, or anything, really. She just stood on the beach for a long, long time, until the tide came up around her ankles and caught her blood when it dripped into the sand below. It wasn't different from any other night, limping the long way home along the silent beaches, trailing blood and sweat (she hadn't cried for a long time). She looked out over the sea, to the glittering nothing of the horizon, and thought it can't be that far. I could even swim.
It wasn't an epiphany, or anything even close to one. She was so tired of being angry, of hurting, of hurting because she was angry and being angry because she was hurting, that the choice was really just about where she wanted to go to sleep. Akala's ports aren't all that well secured, and the ship docked there is big enough for a few stowaways to go unnoticed, so she just- hops on.
She's not caught- she's never caught, in the sense that no one came looking for her. She's not sure anyone tried, and the thought doesn't hurt perhaps as much as it should. Not much does.
The ship was bound for Johto, and when her feet hit solid land she just started wandering. Town to town, city to city, forest to forest; it's dangerous, wandering, without any human company and especially without pokemon companions, but she got by without too many scrapes. She took odd jobs wherever her feet take her, mostly in construction or in moving: she's tall, and strong, and there's always need for an extra hand or two in most labor-intensive jobs.
She's sure people asked for her name, but she can't for the life of her remember what she told them. Whatever name she heard last, more than likely, but no one seemed keen to press her for details so she never bothered to make any up.
It's a good life, for a while. The gnawing kind of sadness stops, for the most part, when she's free to go wherever her feet take her, but she was so tired. A bleeding cold spot in her chest where something feels carved out of her, if it had ever been there. Filling it seemed impossible. Seems impossible, some days, but they're getting fewer and further between.
People and pokemon alike were kind to her, even when she hadn't been kind to them; constantly, if not consistently, over and over again. She hadn't recognized it, when it started, wouldn't be able to pinpoint it now, but they were. Slowly, she came to realize that, and even slower, understand it.
She'd tried being angry and sad and all the things she felt but didn't know how to vocalize, and it had sucked. Then, she tried being happy, and kind, and all the things she wanted, and while it was harder than sadness had ever been it gets easier the longer she tries.
Her journey goes like that for a while: she's alone a lot, those days, but she doesn't get lonely as often. She stuck with travel companions for longer than a few hours at a time, learned what it meant to laugh around a campfire and trust the people next to you to watch your back while you slept. When she helped a young couple traverse the expanse of the Lumiose Badlands, she learned what a hug felt like. She's not sure if she cried.
She's in Hoenn when she picks the name Nopal. She's tired, she's just crossed through the desert, her goggles are still plastered to her face and she's carrying a very loud and very lost Axew. A girl who can't have broken her teens yet stopped her with a knife so dull it couldn't have cut anything. The girl asks her name, and her eyes darted to the side, found a cactus, and she said 'Nopal'.
Of all the names she'd ever been given, had ever chosen, Nopal is the one that stuck. So did the girl, who's name is Nadie, and the Axew, who's name is Spike.
They stuck, and Nopal finds herself dragged through villainous plots, good intentions with bad outcomes, and an awful lot of police buildings. Nopal did not and does not understand a lot of what happened, but they got Spike home, and they found Nadie a home- it's even a home Nopal's welcome in, when she wanted to, which is a concept that's still too alien for her to think about for very long without bringing tears to her eyes.
Still, they settled under the boughs of the great tree of Laverre City, and while Nopal still took her long, wandering walks across the entire Kalos continent she always had somewhere to go back to, a home waiting for her, and she always came back. She's out on one of these walks when Union City is reduced to rubble.
Nopal heard about it late, but she still just about dropped everything to hop on the nearest boat bound for Issho, but the region shut it boarders tight and Nopal didn't exactly have a legal passport, so she busied herself with volunteering with what relief efforts she could from Kalos, until her (landlord? roommate? psuedo-mother figure? Nopal's still not sure what to make of her) hands Nopal an actual, real legal trainer card and tells her to stop moping on her porch. Nopal still doesn't know where she got the photo for the card.
Nadie sat her down, forced her through a crash-course of how to actually battle pokemon, and then made her pinkie swear to call every day and tell her all about Nopal's latest adventure.
It's not that far, Nopal thought, arms looped over the railings of the ship she left on, watching the port shrink into the painted orange horizon. She imagined she can still see Nadie waving, like a blade of grass in the breeze. I'll bet I could even swim.

TRIVIA
- SUPER GAY
- Nopal has never, actually, technically been in a Pokemon battle. She prefers to avoid battling pokemon- she never had any of her own- and in the situation where there was no choice but to fight she mostly left the pokemon to their own devices and set about trying to land a solid right hook on the trainer. She doesn't like taking a passive role in tense situations, and likes even less to be the person giving the orders.
- She has exactly zero confidence that she'll make it very far in the gym trials, but she's willing to give it a go.
- Actually really bad with technology; it doesn't come that easily to her and really, it's so fragile, and phones are so small she CANNOT be expected to keep track of it
- Moderate fear of heights: not too bad with construction work, but does not like flying on ride pokemon when she could walk or take a boat. Other ride pokemon are fine, but something about being so high in the air with nothing to grab onto scares her.
- honestly probably way too reckless she's GOING to get herself killed by standing up in the wrong situation or suplexing the wrong person
- entirely possible that she doesn't actually know what a shadow pokemon is and would not recognize one immediately as a shadow pokemon
- the only types of pokemon she's had any experience training, and not just raising, is fighting and dragon type pokemon.
- Nadie gave her a small pokemon encyclopedia and she genuinely does not know half the pokemon in there. she is going to spend a lot of time reading.
- please be her friend
