I had to save myself before I could save anyone else. I was in free fall and I had to grab my oxygen before I could help you. I made it, you did not. I am sorry. Is it survivor guilt? Today it is. Today I'm a day older than you'll ever be. It's unfair. If I had known what you were going through, I would have given you my oxygen mask and stopped your free fall. There would have been time to save myself before hitting the ground, I'm sure of it. We both could have walked away, a little bumped and bruised but alive. But here I am, knowing your free fall stopped abruptly on the ground. I'm sorry. I wanted things different. Your fall was preventable. Your oxygen was there for you to grab but for reasons that were your own, you didn't. Your legacy far outweighs your mistakes. You will not be known for the way you died, but the kindness you had shown. Thank you for that; your kindness by extension saved me. I've been able to control my free fall for now. I hope that makes you proud. My oxygen is on and I feel the breeze in my face. And I will show the life-saving kindness you showed to me, to others.Rest well. And thank you.
