Description
After Big Man saved Henry, Sir Topham Hatt had told Big Man he wanted to do a little test. And it would be with the Express.STH: You're a very strong engine, Big Man. But now I'm going to put you on the express, to see how well you handle pulling passengers.
Big Man was confused and a little bit surprised.
BM: The express? Oh uh.......... I I I I I I I don't know, sir. My class was ONLY designed and made for freight trains, n n not passenger duties.
STH: I understand that, but I would like you to give it a try. If it doesn't go well, then you can haul freight.
Big Man smiled, as he puffed out of the sheds, and headed to Knapford Station. In America, steam Locomotives had different Types of couplers. These were called knuckle couplers, which looked like a person's knuckles. They were specially fitted on the coaches, with the leading coach having a hook coupling or knuclke coupling.
Gordon was waiting at Knapford Station, as Percy shunted the coaches into the platform.
Big Man blew his whistle long and low
BM: Hey Gordon!
Gordon: W what the?? Don't do that.
Big Man chuckled.
BM: Sorry bout that. Sir Topham Hatt wants me to uh.........t t take the express. W well, as a test run, I think.
Gordon snorted.
Gordon: Pah! And why are YOU taking it? You're a freight hauler. You can't POSSIBLY pull passenger trains! Like the express?
STH: Well Gordon, if you must know, I'm trying to see if Big Man is capable of pulling the express, to see how he manages. You'll be doing his work, while he takes your express for today.
Gordon was speechless.
Gordon: B b b but Sir!
STH: Ahem!
Gordon stayed silent, as he went to do Big Man's work. While Big Man was designed for heavy frieght, he was unfamiliar with pulling coaches.
He was feeling worried about his first run.
Coaches: Oof! Ouch!
BM: Uh oops. Sorry!
Everyone got on board, and when the guard blew his whistle, Big Man jolted the train forward
BM: Come on, come on, come on!
It was a rough ride from Knapford to Vicarstown. The coaches rattled and rocked. They shook and shaked. Before long, Big Man had made it into Vicarstown.
