Tom fumed, how dare they? So there had been 13 murders and no prevail, he challenged anyone to tell him where the clues he had missed were. To top it all, the new detective on the case was a rookie. He took a deep breath, telling himself that it could be worse; they could have chucked him off the case completely.
The over-zealous non-uniform police man burst into Tom’s office, stumbling over a chair leg as he approached a rather unimpressed Tom.
“We’re all clear to visit the 13th scene.”
The lack of respect only served to infuriated Tom further, he grabbed his jacket and stormed past the jittery, rather round policeman. Still angry, Tom wrenched his car door open, hitting his head as he chucked himself into the driving seat.
He approached the house quite quickly, it wasn’t far from the police station or secluded. Tom secretly admired the large looming mansion, he was sure it was probably beautiful had the effect of the period features not been slashed by the offensive police tape.
He slipped through the house, not paying much attention to the details of her journey as he reached the library. His eyes darted over the library, there were few signs of a scuffle in here, nothing but a broken window where they had exited. They followed the crime scene team out to the corpse which was lying contorted on the hill near to the fence, it had been cut up and Tom suspected surgery during consciousness.
There was a smash, as the remaining glass was removed from the broken window for forensics. Tom was given the nod and he began a physical examination, after seeing twelve other victims Tom knew there would be a sick surprise waiting for him, the only question was what? The only part missing from the body was a left nipple, which was not lying on the ground, Tom searched through the body, finally coming to the mouth, in which lay what appeared to be her nipple on her tongue.
He walked away from the body, making his way towards the other teams:
“What lab are the forensic tests being done in?”
“It’s Heywood Sir.”
Tom nodded, “Keep me posted.”
Tom headed home, he was determined to do things his way so he made his way towards his car and headed home. There was nothing he could do without those tests, there could be no doubt that something would have caught on that window. Now there was another detective, he wouldn’t be needed on the scene and could afford to get some well earnt rest until he was notified with the results of the test.
At home, Tom ran himself a hot steamy bath, slowly soaking his feet and working up his body, each of his muscles clenched as he touched the cold porcelain bottom of the bath. He lay back allowing the bubbles to cover his face as he shut himself off from the world, desperately trying to drown his racing mind.
After getting out and ready for bed, he wrapped himself in the large sheets and began to curl himself up. He had failed to leave his racing mind behind as he tossed and turned, trying to sleep but failing. The clock ticked noisily beside him as heaved him self out of bed. He reached for the phone, ignoring the LCD display saying 3:30. He keyed in the number for the laboratory, the ringing abruptly stopped, the answers voice moody and tired sounding.
“It’s DS T. Morten here. Have you got the forensic results for the window from number 13?”
“We just did them, it test positive for Tory Lions hair and a Mr. Martin Prad, the owner of the house. We already notified the other DS and he’s headed out to detain him.”
With that Tom hung up the phone, he hadn’t gone to question him; no he’d gone to detain him. What was the point? Admittedly the evidence looked bad, but they had no proof that it was him. Tom grabbed his clothes, pulling them on slapdash as he ran out of the door.
