Can't help but suspect that once this actor turns his head to look directly at the camera, it won't be a happy laugh that he's in the throes of... Very sinister.
It may be our personal reaction to clown make-up in general, but there's something deeply subversive going on here...
What's noticeable to us in this particular photograph is the direct lighting that doesn't extend far past the foreground figure, enhancing the profile and accentuating the whiteness of the face and its contours as compared to the inherent mismatch between the remaining vivid colours and the far darker environment.
The slats in the wall also remind of us of a certain movie, lending the unseen elements in this image even greater mystique...

It's interesting to me the way I keep spotting this theme in your stuff: The wily actor with the false face. It's a strange sort of Barker-ish (I guess) archetype that I've grown quite fond of.
