Description
I doubt I’ll really ever expand on these characters more than how they are currently, but I felt like doing some concept sketches for them.

In this world a bunch of magical creatures exist together, both from actual mythology and creatures I create.
The manticore is Pyramos. I wanted to stray from the regular lion design so her coat isn’t super accurate. I also wanted to add some interest to her color palette so I included the small touches of red.

Veer Dawes, the smaller one, is an enfield. They’re not super well known and I’m pretty sure they mostly involve just eagles being mixed with foxes, but I didn’t feel like that so I chose a magpie. Among other reasons, the magpie has nice contrasting colors with the orange of the fox.

These two kind of serve a mentor and apprentice role in the story. When Veer finds Pyra, the manticore is not interested at all in taking on this far younger and much more lively person. But through persistence and Pyra’s deep connection with Veer’s grandmother, she wins the beast over.

In this story there’s a world grounded in reality. Everyone is a cat. They then can access this world in which they turn into some fantastical beast. Pyra grew up with this knowledge but Veer is only just now realizing the entire world her late grandmother had kept hidden from her. And now, stepping into the world for the first time, she has a bounty on her head due to her connection with both her grandmother and Pyra.

The concept may be a little too fantastical and…fanfiction-y? To really create a deep, complex world. But it’s a nice little story in my head with characters I enjoy. They’ll likely appear in some other story.
