Description

Chiyoe's first origin prompt: Original Form

Chiyoe was transformed by Enki from a forgotten Nihonga painting in a semi-abandoned museum wing. This is my depiction of the whole painting, so Chiyoe's original form isn't just the dragon, it's the entire piece including the background, etc. Over time, parts of the painting began to wear away.

Specifically, the dragon's bottom jaw began to fade, giving it the appearance of having no mouth (if you look really closely you can still see it a little). The scale detail disappeared, and the eye began to blur so it looked like the dragon didn't have a pupil. Parts of the cherry tree began to fade too, making it look like the branches were coming directly out of the dragon's back.

By the time Enki saw the painting, it eerily resembled an esk. A detailed painting of an esk couldn't exist, yet somehow this item had coincidentally come into existence. Enki is very spiritual and believed this was a sign from the divine energy of the universe, and declared that the painting MUST be transformed, thus creating Chiyoe!

Before I started this piece I read about this history and characteristics of Nihonga paintings, and I did my best to honor the style and tradition. Stylistically, this was a challenge, and I'm not a professional so I like to think that this painting is maybe more of a "replication" of the original painting. Like this is how Enki remembers the painting years and years later after not having seen it in a long time.

The story of how Enki found this painting can be found here .
