Oh and no one has the right to call ''original characters'' mary sue solely for being powerful or used in fandom related art/comics. After all, you created this character with more effort.
Here's a nice summary on the term :Β en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mary_Sue
To summarise the main traits of a mary sue
*Female character
*usually Young asf
*self insert who focusses on fantasies rather than creative writing
*Mary sue changing ''personality'' or her opinions about anything all the time. (Like, oh hey dis guy is evil but he hot, so now I'm evil too without a reason lolo)
*plain uninteresting personality with zero interesting traits
*Story cannot continue without her being in the scene (You made comics that have kitten do not much, meaning she's not the center, other characters do something too.)
*Everyone loves the mary sue character, agressively/sexually at times
*Mary sue is incapable of failing at anything / or does everything right on accident
*Mary sue never does anything wrong / is always the victim
*Every character they come in contact with fights for their attention / friendship
*Mary sue makes other characters go OOC almost 100% of the time
*Mary sue has abilities incapable of existing in a singular universe (in fanfiction were multiverses aren't a thing, rulebending the universe, basicially making it an AU because of the mary sue)
Why she ain't a Mary Sue
*Multiverse! in fanart comics or interaction comics, if admitted a multiverse exists, rulebending magic or anything else doesn't make your character OP, Its because your character comes from an universe where thats normal.
*She has proper established traits / personality, and doesn't change who she is.
*She isn't perfect and neither all people she comes in contact with like her right off the bat. (Kitten likes to fite )
*She doesn't have the unlimited capacity to gain new talents or be better than everyone else at everything (like suddenly being able to heal the universe or bring peace, she a halfdemon.)
*Interaction comics don't neccesarily have her as centeralisation, or have her force fandom characters go entirely OOC.
*She definetly ain't a victim, more of an anti-hero from what I see, me likey.
So if you see any people comment that your ocs are a mary sue, keep in mind, that they aren't.
There's a very specific summary to it from what I seen, and most mary sues are self-inserts with little effort to make them in-depth.
Same goes for Gary Stu (male variant)

"Mary Sue" is a nebulous concept. The definition will vary depending on who you ask and it's in general more helpful to the creator to tell them 'why she's a Mary sue' instead of using a word that ultimately doesn't mean anything...
They don't have to be flawless to be a 'mary sue' and even then, I do think that most of the time, Kitten's interactions are ones of a 'mary sue', nerfing the character around her if not them being completely out of character, winning every match she's in, everyone either fearing her or despiting her (yet for the latter, they are always represented as weaker than her). Her 'flaws' can't be really considered ones because it doesn't put her in situations where her flaws puts her in danger. She'll always avoid the consequences of her actions and won't work on herself. There aren't any conflicts around her.
However, this isn't inherently a bad thing. Kitten doesn't really "have a story" and is more a self insert/vent character. If her role is to be a sort of power trip to the creator and just make cool and edgy scenarios where she or kitten is the strongest, that's totally fine! She can do this for fun and that's a great thing! On the other hand, if she wants to give a story to Kitten and make her a character that goes through development and improves her writing, Kitten still needs work.

hi, my comment was kinda from a while ago. (probably outdated)
I agree with you on most things.
Since fiction and ''fan-fiction'' should be considered flexible,
even if you advice people on ''hey ur character is kinda op and people think theyre a mary sue''
Its better to first consider ''is this person drawing for fun/vent/etc?''
The mary sue comment can sometimes be very discomforting to creators who are just having fun with interaction shenanigans.
Usually the mary sue comment feels very misplaced when someone is obviously drawing these things for fun.
Kitten in some eyes is a mary sue, but why should we care if she is or not?
Commenting is optional, its a choice. People can be friendly, people can be less friendly.
We didn't make her. CNeko draws the character for fun, and makes these fandom related things for fun.
As viewer we can critize and complain, but that shouldn't devalue the feelings of the creator.
I think in my original comment I tried to say ''that they think she is, doesn't mean it should bother you if you have fun.''
After all, everyone always got an opinion c:
TDR;l My explanation is a lil wee outdated and from a while ago, I figure I was trying to say ''don't devalue your character because other people think your oc is a mary sue.'' Viewers/comments can't enforce their opinion.

Mary Sue/Garry Stu is a character that warps the setting and make it revolve around them thus breaking the immersion.
It's a bad thing if the content of the work feels like the author is jerking off with the setting and use it to live out their shallow power fantasies.
It's a good thing if the content of the work feels like an over-the-top bombastic self-ridicule parody.

RielZero In reply to Dzonatan [2020-01-22 17:54:59 +0000 UTC]
yes I agree,
if its meant as a joke/funny thing, its not a story about ''look how perfect my character is and how this universe loves them''
so it rules out of characters being mary sue
the annoying thing about the phrase is that people quickly yell Mary sue if an oc is just powerful.
Being OP don't make ya mary sue,
breaking immersion does
