She has a very straight forward and (pun intended) cold demeanor with it comes to fighting/violent situations especially with in comes to defending those she cares about, but despite how she approaches those events, she's very compassionate and warm hearted and easy to talk to despite her monotone voice and mostly blank expression. Also, even though she wears clothing meant for the extreme cold, she doesn't appear to get to hot or even sweat.
This character was initially supposed to appear as a grim reaper with a mixture of heavy winter and elegant clothing. Example, the hood the grim reaper having fur at the borders. Also, she would have had a royal like dress that would flap in the wind as she used her powers. However, the more I sketched her, the more she looked like an eskimo person, and as a result, I got rid of the reaper approach stuck with the eskimo aesthetic. Here's a list of the inspirations and references I used for Floe:
- The clothing were Katara (Avatar: The Last Airbender), Korra (Legend of Korra), and Juvia Lockser (Fairy Tail). Katara and Korra were for the blue colors of the outfit and how the gloves should look, and Juvia was the line pattern, belt, boots, and brown used. Additionally, all three were references in how the fur should look which all three were a big help on.
- Ivy Valentine (Soulcalibur) was the reference for her hair mostly the bangs, but I used the brown from Juvia to help bring out the brown more and not make the color pallet messy. I tried using different colors including Ivy's hair color but nothing worked.
- Ice Breaker, the bludgeon, was inspired by medieval bludgeon maces and more specifically the Gada, a 17th century mallet and blunt mace from the Indian subcontinent. The original idea was to give Ice Breaker the spikey point at the top like the Gada, but it wouldn't look right if used it as a smashing weapon.
- The colors for Ice Breaker and what it's made out of was inspired by Ice VII. Ice VII is a real life type of ice that can be found on Earth and other planets that's unbreakable. When I discovered this, I thought it was perfect for Floe and would help make her and her weapon stand out more than just another silver and gold weapon.
- The forearm guard are walrus tusks that were inspired by Baraka (Mortal Kombat) but have them be backwards instead.
A few changed or canned facts while designing Floe:
- While the walrus tusks stayed, I wanted to give her more arctic animal influences stuff to her design, but things got didn't work. I'm about to say why.
- During the coloring process, I tried to make the outfit look like an emperor penguin with most of it (where the dark blue is) being a darker blue or black, the brown tips (right above her breasts) being orange and yellow, and the middle portion being yellow fading into yellow, and while I thought it would have been cool, it became very messy with the colors clashing with one another. The use of too many colors was ruining her.
- Floe was gonna have polar bear claws on her gloves which she would have used like Wolverine (X-Men), but the black would have been hard to see, the hands would've been too busy, and it would've been too many ways for her to fight (she does some kind of disadvantage).
- The fur around her neck was supposed to have an arctic fox head, but I felt that (once again) would have been too busy.
- I was going to draw her hand up pointing at the viewer with a snow storm blowing toward the screen at the lower right, but I didn't have time and didn't have enough room to properly showcase that. The hand reference would have been Vegeta (Dragonball) when he uses the Big Bang Attack, and the storm reference would have been the blizzard attack in Pokémon Stadium.
I had a lot of fun making Floe and would love to draw her again some day, and I hope others like her too.
