The rain had not lifted since the battle ended. The angry sound of thunder rumbled in the cloud-filled skies as water pelted down in harsh stinging droplets into the camp. All cats were in the dens, sheltered from the weather, but one cat that resigned in the nests hidden in the crevice in the cliff face stayed awake and careless to the needs of herself.
Foxkit and Lightningkit had both long stopped their suckle and had already drifted into a deep sleep as Robinfeather curled her tail around her two newborn sons once more, ever so gently sweeping them closer to her warm belly as she listened to the assaulting rain outside the nursery and felt the thorn-sharp claws of sadness dig into her heart. She lay there, alone in the stone den, extra moss around her and her kits for maximum comfort, as she let grief flood her vision as she stared at the floor. Robinfeather swallowed back a sob, daring not to risk awakening her babies, as she allowed memories of Antblaze to flash through he mind: strong and sleek with his ginger-brindle black pelt as he charged, yowling to StarClan with all the might he held in his body and spirit, into the fray brought to the LakeClan territories by IceClan.
At least she was fortunate enough to not see him slain. She had been actively kitting as the battle raged on just outside.
That's when it hit her at last. The horrible truth.
Robinfeather wasn't just without the mate she loved so dearly for moons.
Foxkit and Lightningkit were going to have to grow up without their father.
The father that never got to see them. Not even once.
Not even once.
