Carmenta --

Carmenta is the Roman goddess of childbirth and is credited with bringing the Greek pantheon to Rome. Not much is known about her.

This image was done for the 8th San Francisco Olympians Festival in which the ancient Roman, Egyptian, and Babylonian gods are on display. Playrights create plays based off of specific subjects and artists create images based on the deities or the play. The play for Carmenta is inspired by Tanya Donelly (from the bands Throwing Muses and Belly) and follows the story of a rock star turned doula who meets her biggest fan that is pregnant. One helps the other and the mortal is confronted with the essence of the divine. For this image, I decided to get inspiration from the play and make an abstract image of a guitar with a new born child at its center.
