Words Below:
It was February and for Valentine's Day a restaurant called Magical Surprise was offering a dating service. For a little more than the usual cost of a meal, they would find a date for their customers. The two of them would enjoy a special prepared meal together. Then they could go elsewhere together or go their separate ways depending on how things went.
Otto was a man in his twenties. He did not have a date so he decided to take them up on her offer. He went over in early February and signed up for their dating service. They asked him a number of questions which he answered to the best of his ability. They told him they would deliver a message at the proper time.
On his way out, Otto passed a woman in her twenties named Amara who was waiting in line. He did not think much about it. As the days went by, Otto occasionally thought about the date they had set up for him. He wondered who his date would be. He doubted things would work out but he figured at least the food would be good. The night before Valentine's Day, he went to bed not thinking anything unusual would happen.
Otto dreamed about walking through the city wearing a dress that did not quite fit him right. Despite his trouble walking around, no one paid much attention to him. Gradually the shape of his body changed so the dress fit him better. Looking down at the sandals he was wearing, he could see that his feet and legs had changed too. All of his body hair had vanished.
Rubbing his hand through his hair, Otto discovered it had become much longer. It did not take him, or her, long to realize she had become a woman in her dream. She did not panic because she thought things would return to normal when she woke up. Then she woke up and panicked. Otto was still a woman.
The place she was in was not familiar to her either. It looked like the room of a young woman. A quick look at some old mail told her that her name was Amara and she lived in the same city that Otto did. She got dressed as if it was something she did everyday, grabbed her purse, and headed to the door. On her way, she found a card on the kitchen table.
It was addressed to Otto and Amara. This left no doubt the card was intended for her. She picked up the card and read it. It reminded her she had taken part in the Magical Surprise Dating Service and told her to come to the restaurant at 6:30 P.M. to meet her date.
She imagined Amara as Otto wondering what had happened to him, just like she did. Knowing exactly where her old house was and being in the same city, she could have easily driven over there. However, something told her that would ruin the surprise. She decided to watch television instead. Her taste in shows had not changed.
Amara, formerly Otto, arrived at Magical Surprise Restaurant a little early. She certainly did not want to be late for something like this. Otto, formerly Amara, was already there. They talked to each other explaining their past and what they had done that day. At precisely 6:30 P.M. their meal was delivered to them. The food was indeed good as expected.
"When they said magical surprise, they were not kidding," Amara, formerly Otto, remarked.
"I certainly did not expect anything like this," agreed Otto, formerly Amara.
After dinner they were given three options. They could either switch back immediately, switch back the next day, or remain as they were. Otto and Amara discussed this. Both of them decided to pass on the first option. They would wait until the next day to make their final decision.
The two of them walked out of the restaurant together. They had a day to learn what their new lives had to offer before making their decision. They agreed they would swap back unless both of them agreed to remain as they were. Both of them secretly wanted to stay as they were and thought they could convince the other one to do so as well. All it would take was a little persuasion.
