Description
Morty frowned as his eyes made contact with Rick's form.
He was hunched over, sitting on the couch with his head in his hands, covering his face.
Morty recognized this as him being angry.
Willing to take the risk of being yelled at, he sat next to him.
"Um... Hey, Rick... Are you okay-"
Rick's shoulders were shaking.
Morty could just make out the sounds of muffled sobs.
"R-Rick?"
Morty gently grabbed his wrist and pulled it away from his face.
What worried him was that Rick didn't fight back.
Rick's face was red and tears were threatening to fall.
He refused to meet Morty's concerned gaze, and he shuffled awkwardly.
"Rick... What's wrong?"
And then it happened.
Rick began to cry.
"I'm sorry M-Morty! I'm so sorry!"
Morty couldn't understand anything else Rick said through his tears.
"Rick, calm down..."
Rick just kept repeating the words 'I'm sorry'.
Morty hugged Rick, not caring what he would say once this was all over.
"It's okay, Rick... I forgive you."
Morty murmured this, even though he had no idea what Rick was apologizing for.
After a while, Rick slowed down, and resorted to small whines and hiccups.
Morty let him go.
"Now, what were you talking about?"
"... Him. The King."
"I don't- oh."
Mr. Jellybean. Rick didn't honestly blame himself for it... Did he?
"Rick... That wasn't your fault-"
"Yes it was. If I had just- if I had been there... Then none of that would have..."
Rick devolved back into tears, although it was less violent now. He must be tired from all this uncontrollable sobbing.
Morty felt tears coming to his own eyes just watching Rick feeling so weak...
Morty hugged him again and squeezed his shoulders.
"Rick. You saved me from him when it mattered. You killed him. And I'm so grateful for that! He will never bother me again. Please don't blame yourself... Please..."
Rick hugged him back for the first time in God knows how long, finally letting himself cry freely.
Morty just rubbed his back, letting the feelings come out.
After what felt like an eternity, suddenly there was silence.
Rick snored softly, with tears still in the corner of his eyes.
Morty smiled gently and wiped them away.
He cuddled up to Rick and muttered a quick 'I love you' before joining him in sleep.
