The Year 2239...

A year humankind will never forget...or recover from.

Five years after the beginning of the Third World War...a raging conflict sourcing from depletion of natural resources and the desire to control what remains of them...unrestrained advances in technological development…and an unbalance of political power between the nations of the world.

Each of the most powerful nations on Earth were divided against each other. Alliances were seldom made and even fewer kept for long. The United States, having mostly relied on products and labor from other countries was  seriously weakened in terms of industrial strength. Militaristic strength has all but diminished, due to constant attacks from their former allies.

It seemed like almost every country that ever had a grudge against the U.S. took this war as an opportunity to exact their revenge. Enraged by their treachery, the government began granting special contracts to several companies in the hopes that the ultimate weapon can be created.

Many would not live to realize their mistake…

An American corporation: International Biotechnology Services (IBS) was granted special permission by the federal government to develop biological weapons when recent technological breakthroughs made nuclear weapons harmless. Over two decades, they have succeeded in creating the ultimate biological weapon: a microorganism spawned from genetically recombining the abilities and traits of the world's deadliest diseases and then mutated by constant, unshielded exposure to high-temperature environments. They have codenamed the project: Apocalypse...

The organism is capable of feeding on all forms of living biological matter. Within 24-72 hours after infection, Apocalypse ceases reproduction and feeding, travels to the hypothalamus of the brain and raises the body temperature of it's victims to lethal levels in excess of 140-450 degrees Celsius. The host dies an agonizing death of "burning up from the inside" and is reduced to a pile of ashes so it seems that the host died of Spontaneous Human Combustion. The only sign of Apocalypse as the cause is a small quantity of blood that drips from the ashes that is capable of spreading the microorganism to others.

By 2239, Apocalypse has been mass produced and loaded onto thousands of missile warheads, ready to be used against humans for the first time...then something goes horribly wrong.

An arsenal of Apocalypse warheads detonate accidentally in mid-air, en route to it's target. Carried by the winds, Apocalypse begins to spread across the earth...

Within a year, all of man’s attempts to stop the organisms’ spread have proven useless. Apocalypse has destroyed most life on earth. Humanity sought refuge in the cold abyss of outer space (they also took samples of genetic material from many species animals and plants with them so they would be able to clone them for their needs)

It would not be for over 100 years that humanity could return to their planet…

Scientists develop a method to neutralize Apocalypse...it succeeds. When humans return to Earth, they find that their homes have been ravaged not only by the war, but the Apocalypse organism was feeding on the bio-matter that they consisted of. The governments of the world make peace with each other, but they would never be able to maintain separation, due to the quantity of their resources destroyed by Apocalypse. They decide to forge their governments together, to merge into a single, powerful political body. Setting aside races, religion, and gender, they pull together not to restore the earth to it's original beauty, but to surpass it.

Cities are rebuilt, life is restored, new energy sources are created, and the union of governments was so successful, it would be continued for a long time...

IBS, however, was reduced to a mere shadow of it's former self. After a federal investigation, the company's founder and CEO is tried in court and found guilty, responsible for the Apocalypse outbreak and killed during a government raid aboard one of the corporation‘s space-based research facilities…

Despite all the millions of innocents killed by their weapon, widespread ecological devastation, and the public rallying for the contrary,  IBS was allowed to avoid bankruptcy by becoming a division of the federal government. It was a period of reconstruction and IBS still was, after all, one of the largest producer of medical supplies and pharmaceutical companies left in the world.

Nevertheless there were other consequences for their actions. The permit to create biological weapons and the Apocalypse weapons program have been terminated…and the last remaining samples of the weapon were sealed away indefinitely at a secure installation.

Never to see the light of day...or threaten humanity ever again...

Or so they had hoped...

Three-hundred Twenty-Three years later...

The present year is 2562. IBS is still in business and has long ago separated from the federal government to regain their status as an individual corporation. Additionally, the new CEO is a relative of the original founder of the corporation. Many of the laboratories that specialized in Apocalypse research have been decommissioned or abandoned. An incident occurs at a home at the summit of Mt. Saint Helens in Washington state, a defunct IBS testing facility lies ¼ of a mile away. A 9-year old girl witnesses the death of her parents, two active IBS researchers, right before her eyes. After EMS respond to the call, they transfer the care of the daughter over to her grandfather, another IBS scientist. The Medical Examiner has received the remains of the humans and concludes that they have died of Spontaneous Human Combustion, most likely from absorbing too much heat from the hot springs on the volcanic mountain that they have been known to visit…

But, suspiciously, from the ashes drips a small quantity of liquid blood...

Meanwhile, Global Security Forces (GSF) the international peace-keeping force that was created shortly after the forging of the governments and the incident known as "The Apocalypse Factor" is currently engaged in an ever-constant battle with the elite group of violent radicals known and The Loyalists, Defenders, and Knights of the Apocalypse. (LDKA) Although their origin is unknown, they seem to have a close link with past events. Their intentions seem directed towards restoring conflict, distrust and separation between the world's governments. Their influence have grown to a small chain of countries that span the earth.

With weekly raids of weapon-producing facilities, they seem to be arming themselves for their main goal...But what?

The last raid, ended in the theft of deadly radioactive-based weaponry…

Their final objective is realized when they attack the secure installation that contains the final samples of the terrifying Apocalypse weapon…

In the chaos of the situation, a GSF Captain, whose team specialized in tracking LDKA's attacks, is killed when he attempted to prevent their escape. One of the anarchists fired a rocket launcher at him, his body slammed against and breached a tank containing an unknown substance. As he died, his body became coated with the compound...

Despite all our efforts to prevent it...a single capsule containing the ultimate biological weapon is taken by the enemy.

Several weeks after the theft, no demands have been made, nor has the weapon been released…

But humankind has had Three-Hundred Twenty-Three years to prepare for all eventualities...a network of satellites that specialize in the neutralization of Apocalypse orbit the earth, ready to fire anytime, anywhere the group might decide to release it...

But where they plan to release Apocalypse is somewhere where no satellite can hit them, no one can find them, and nothing can stop them...

GSF's worst fears become reality when LDKA attacks a government laboratory researching time travel. But before they could be apprehended, the anarchists escape through time and space into the past...and detonate the bomb that they planted in the complex to ensure that none would follow.

Amidst the rubble and destroyed machinery, they access a computer which reveals the trajectory of the group: Washington D.C., December 20th, 1999...

The explosion had failed to destroy all the machines, so all hope was not yet lost. The damage done to it, however, only allows a select few to travel to and from the past. The best of GSF's commandos are selected, headed by the Captain who, against all odds, survived the rocket explosion, but changed on the inside...

Now, the fate of all humankind rests on the bravery, skill, and efficiency of these soldiers. They arrive in the past successfully and learn that the LDKA death squad have stated to release the weapon in 12 days. They have made no demands and expressed no interests in returning to the future...

They have nothing to gain and nothing to lose...but we do. Humankind's future...

To avoid interfering with the past, they must avoid all federal involvement and battle their enemy on their own. The clock is now ticking...moving slowly towards the end of all civilized life on earth in the past...and future. Can they stop the Apocalypse weapon in time?
