Description
She had taken this trail up the mountain many times, she could walk it with her eyes closed. Her paws had worn a soft path through the undergrowth, little puffs of dust rising with each footfall. This would be her last time to travel to the peak for who knew how long. When Maire left the village tomorrow morning, there was no telling how long it would be before she would see her childhood home again. She wanted to see the whole of the Island, not just the small corner her family’s village rested, she wanted to see the other cities, wanted to meet as many of the other centaurs that she could. There was so much of the world out there to see.
She had grown up on her grandfather’s stories, stories of his travels and all those he had met. Her mother had traveled for a short time in her youth, meeting Maire’s father on her travels and bringing home a baby. The entire village would see her off in the morning and she wanted to spend the evening alone.
When the trees finally opened up as she reached the top of the trail, Maire breathed in the breeze that swept up the cliff face towards her. The view was magnificent, she could see the specks of the village around that small lake, the deep green of the heavy forests fading into the horizon. Clouds were gathering on the far horizon, moving south and away from the village. She could smell the damp in the air from that far storm and smiled, she would miss this.
Maire settled down on the stone ledge looking out across the valley, and let her thoughts fade and silence sift across her mind. The sun did its slow dance across the cloud speckled sky, it would be noon soon. She had brough up some strips of jerky, nibbling on it as she watched the storm develop and move on.
“Maire!” her cousin’s voice brought me out of my trance, and she couldn’t help but smile. Katari was six years younger than her and wasn’t as interested in the mountains and forests as she was. The younger canine came panting up the path and leaned against a rock. “Why do you come up here! That climb is too much!”
“I like the view, and if you climbed more often, it wouldn’t be too much,” Maire was comfortable teasing her cousin. She lifted her hand, becoming her cousin closer with a smile, “The view is amazing.”
