For what it's worth, I think you did something neat with the depth. The girl and the sign pop out nicely and the slightly different style for the sky pushes it back off into the distance nicely!

Not sure what you failed to achieve, but I hope you get your desired effect next time. That said, the twilight sky looks good to me. I'm a little biased though, I like sunset/dusk/twilight settings, but they're not commonly drawn. So I'm just happy to see one at all.
