The predecessor to the S class of 1924, the Opponent class destroyer--renamed the M class in 1924 in accordance with new naming conventions--shows the first inklings of the design legacy of that long lived series. With its whalebow and forwardly mounted torpedo tubes, the type was a substantial improvement over the earlier Interceptor class ships in all ways. With a bit of forethought, the design's increased gun calibers were mounted in high-angle emplacements, specifically intended as an anti-zeppelin mounting, following their use in the Great War as bombers and scouting platforms. However in the long run, this consideration was replaced with the desire to further protect the gun operators, resulting in following classes trading their high-angle mounts for gun emplacements with forward facing plates to provide some degree of protection to gun operators.
The Opponent class, redesignated as the M class in 1924, was soon superseded by later designs, and stands as somewhat of an aborted evolutionary line with her minimal superstructure and essentially AA-capable main armament. However, the design soldiered on, and remains in service up to the present, albeit with an increasing reputation for mechanical failures. The M class ships are typically utilized as training ships at this point, but remain capable of frontline operations at least on paper.

Armament is pretty light for a ship that weights over 1000 tons.
