I'm Common Human Error on YouTube, Jstblm1 on Reddit, Commonhumanerror2306 on wiki. I figured I should get more into the community, lol. My bad if you didn't know me before! ✌️
Here’s my review of Day of the Dad I wrote on Reddit (Jstblm1).
I’ll be posting the other two reviews I wrote in the next two days.
Enjoy the read! (I made minor edits)
Simple Plot
* When I first saw Day of the Dad’s plot synopsis, I thought it was simplistic. Too simplistic, actually. I remember thinking that the show had run out of ideas. All of this was before I watched Day of the Dad, so that was really all I had to use. When I saw the episode, I had that notion reinforced. The lack of good joke material caused me to forget most of the episode, and it wasn’t really elevated by outstanding character performances. It’s pretty standard. I don’t intend to go in depth about this because what can I say? But if you enjoyed the jokes, great!
Unfortunate Implications
* Day of the Dad has sci fi in it. I’m not a fan of the sci fi, but that’s neither relevant nor worth exploring. The usage of sci fi in this episode leads to an unintentionally malicious portrayal of Lori. Instead of owning up to her mistakes, talking to her loving boyfriend who would surely understand she never meant to hurt his family (I cover this in the contrived section), she opts to use dangerous and evidently experimental Men In Black memory wipe technology, because it’s easier for her to wipe someone’s memory than own up to the consequences of her actions. I hope I’ve explained the problem well, because this is an unintentionally villainous portrayal of the character. This is something that would work in an absurdist comedy where reality is optional or a world like Family Guy where everyone is a bad person, maybe even Gumball could pull it off, but it’s out of place in this show inhabited by characters the show wants me to like.
Contrived
* Parts of the episode make no sense; by “parts” I mean the setup to the conflict. I understand why Lori doesn’t speak to Arturo, but she doesn’t tell Bobby either. Why? If she’s scared of Bobby or anything, it’s never established, but it’s also irrational to be scared. Like I said before, Bobby loves and cares for Lori; he would definitely understand this was an accident. I’d be delighted if someone could come up with a good reason why Lori wasn’t able to talk to Bobby, explain what happened, have a discussion with him and Arturo, and just solve the problem.
Fixes?
* It doesn’t take much to fix Day of the Dad. Only two things need to be done. The incident needs to be way more drastic than “guy gets shoved into a puddle”. It needs to be more serious, so that’s Lori has a better reason to be scared. And next, Lori should at least attempt to talk to Arturo. She is tired of running away from Arturo in disguises, so she tells Bobby what happened, and Bobby finally helps Lori work up the courage to speak to him. Arturo, still hurt from such a bad experience, refuses to talk to her. Lori, in desperation, is willing to try anything to move on from this experience, so she resorts to the unthinkable when Lisa offers what seems to be the only solution that works.
Postscript
* I originally wrote a section of positives, but the section was quite lackluster, so instead I’ll just tack it on here. It’s not the worst episode of Season 6, and there were a few jokes I enjoyed the idea of. I don’t remember a lot of the episode, though.
Do you have anything to add? Something I missed? Did I overlook something? I welcome differing perspectives! I look forward to getting to know DA!
