Hey guys - it's been a while since this group has had any sort of update.  However I thought I may bring something to light for you all.

Value your work on how much YOU think it's worth

Don't feel the pressure of feeling the need to work for extremely low rates.  You're all amazing artists - why should you have to work for well below the minimum wage?

Some of us are trying to get commissions to feed ourselves, pay our bills and keep ourselves happy and healthy - I have recently seen people requesting commissions for $20 (£14).  That for some of us wouldn't even feed us for a day or two!  Don't allow these people to intimidate you.  Your work is what you make of it.  You value it on how much you think it's worth.  It's your blood, sweat, hard work and tears going into the hours you put into your work.

You charge for what you want!  Don't charge for what they want.  You will often find clients will try to hire you for as low as possible - and sometimes it's good to say no.  People come up with the excuse that they can't afford you - don't let that sway you.  I can't afford a nice new phone - but I doubt Apple or Samsung will lower their prices just because we can't afford it.  If they want your art - they should save up.

Remember, you are all very talented individuals - no matter whether you are just starting out or have been doing it for years!

Okay portray this:
"Why would customer pay for ARTIST A (60$ a picture, lower skill) vs ARTIST B (30$, higher skill)?"
Off course, you could claim that's a fake debate, which could be understandable in some way.

This debate make a lot of artist undercharge or overcharge themselves, sadly. I could never sell myself to 80$ per pics.
If 10$ an hour is the min wage, shouldn't I ask for this much? No. That's impossible. With the current market,
you're better off with 90% chance of 4x 30$ than 5% chance of 4x 70-80$. At 30$ per picture (FullColors),
I simply cannot pay for my rent (750). With only usually 2-4 commissions per month, I can't afford to charge more.
This would scare away potential customer. Theses customers might not have a high enough wage of living either.
Would personally love to go beyond 20$/30$, but that's just not feasible. At least I have my dear Patreons.. ...

It's infuriating on many levels.

Very inspiring to read, but I think there's got to be a line between 'how much I think my art is worth' versus 'how much people are actually willing to pay me for my art'.
I mean, I could look at some of my digital pictures and say they should cost a couple hundred dollars because that's how much I value them. However, if I want people to actually buy them (especially if I want any sort of income or if money is really tight), it'd be a better idea to price more reasonably, put myself in a customer's shoes and price way cheaper or have sales.
I know what it's like to be on the buyer's side and, yes, sure, some artist's works and commissions are definately worth the several hundred or thousand points they're charging, but, at the same time, it turns me away from wanting to commission or buy simply out of the fact it's so darned expensive and I just don't have the money for it.
That would also make me less likely to recommend it to friends otherwise it'd be like saying 'Hey! Look at this gorgeous art ... that... we'll never be able to afford.... ~*sadly walks away*~ '

ARRGG! Why must this even exist!? Such a dilemma. :,(

Thank you. This really means a lot to me. Knowing it and practicing it is one thing but seeing like-minded individuals every once in a while gives me a warm fuzzy feeling! \o/ Thank you.
