I remember him from the days when I was just a boy.

He stood solitary upon a hill, motionless as the statue of a warrior from older days, lance held by his side as if ready to battle an unseen monster. His cloak caught the wind like a loosed sail, sparking in my young mind images of caped crusaders from ancient times. At the time, in a moment of fancy, I recall believing him to be just so; a ghost from the past, a specter unable to depart from this world until they found their peace. But childish curiosity spoke otherwise, and I called to him.

He turned, and a kind of fear came over me - no visible face looked upon me, no human visage. Just a pale reflection of the evening gazed down.

He was silent for several moments, before turning away and slowly pointing up, up towards a single blazing star.

Then he walked away.

It has been many long years since then, but I still ask where such a figure would hail from, and to where they would travel.

Perhaps he had no destination, none but the black night and the sky beyond.

I wonder if he ever reached that star.
