Description

After many scattered days of laboring at SketchBookExpress, I have finally produced a somewhat-decent physical map of the continent of Faern—one of the two major continents on my fictional world, Aurhìm.

This map has quite a bit of history to it, insofar as its creation is concerned.

(Warning: artist's rambling reminiscences dead ahead)

It started about five or six (probably closer to six) years ago when I drew (and then inked) a map-ish thing as a way of helping to get my world-builing ideas out on paper, as well as to give myself some sort of physical reference point for further developments of my ideas. I made multiple photocopies of this image, and then used it for a variety of things.

This:

is an example of me doing just that: building ideas for my world, and my story using one of the photocopies as my metaphorical "sandbox".

Eventually, I scanned the untarnished, unmarked original (which I still have in a manilla folder in my room, by the way!) it onto a computer. I the fussed about with Photoshop for many an hour—coloring it in, neatly labeling it, and so on—before finally producing the following image:

There are two continents in this map: the northern continent is Faern; the southern continent is Seterras. Realizing that this wasn't sufficient (both as it was, and, because my ideas about my world were still taking shape at the time), I began making more inked hard-copies—squiggly-lined things that, upon scanning onto the computer, I stitched together with the portion of Faern displayed in the above image as I worked toward making it into an honest-to-goodness supercontinent. I have an image of it in this state, though it is not as of yet uploaded here onto my deviantART account.

Seeing as I'd need to have more of an idea of what was to be in my world before I went about adding more landmass to it, I spent a year or so working on my story, and on my ideas for Aurhìm in general. About a year-and-a-half ago (while in a lecture for a topology class, no less!), I scratched out a very messy, but otherwise complete, draft for a global map of Aurhìm. After having done so, I proceeded to revisit my earlier, expanded version, of Aurhìm's map and fiddle with it. Skipping a bit past the late summer, autumn, and early winter of 2013 (which were all HORRIBLE, no thanks to my completely incapacitating neck injury from having studied too much), by early 2014, I was making strides toward fleshing out and finalizing the Faernish continent. I've spent the last few weeks working on it, on and off, until today (the 29th of March, 2014), when I've finally accomplished enough with it to have something that, at least for me, is worth sharing with others.

(End of rambling reminiscences)

The black dot is the approximate location of the city of Meovîgn*, the capitol of both the Maridan Union and the Kingdom of Marin. That city plays a significant role as the setting of much of my novel-in-progress, "The Song of the Wind" (Book 1 of the "Dahrian Chronicles" series)—excerpts of which can be found here:

I will get working on making an annotated and properly labeled version of this map, which I will eventually put in the place of the current, unlabeled version.

Dark blue indicates saltwater; light blue indicates freshwater. The brown, vermiform markings are my attempt at representing the major mountain ranges on Faern.

* Pronounced: [may-oh-vin], or [may-oh-vine], or—if you know how to pronounce French—[mé-eau-vin]. Also, the circumflex atop the î is there primarily because I think it makes the name look cooler.
