Haha, thank you Matte painting is a mixture of painting and photo manipulation. The purpose of the photo manipulation part is, as this technique is very commonly used by concept artists for big film productions, to make the concept art look as much like the final set will in real life. I.e., to give it that little extra "this is a real place" kind of feeling rather than "this is a painting" feeling. Although painting is still a huge component of the making of the image.
