Description
The steppes of the Dizhchur are harsh, and the Arulu-Liongvu people who inhabit them are harsher. Even where the land can be worked thanks to rivers, people's lives are still filled with hardship and challenge. While this does create harsh, hardy and independent people, it also makes for a harsh, ruthless society in which only the strong and remorseless survive. The Ongari faith, the belief in the Great Steppe Lord, is one of the few things that helps mitigate that issue, by creating a set of rules and guides for its followers. Harsh rules for Harsh people, based on honor and respect to give a semblance of order to a chaotic life style.
One of these rules are strict guidelines for marriage and family, especially the sanctity of marriage oaths. the Arulu-Lionvgvu do treat woman more equally than their neighbors to the south or west, but they still expect them to be subservient to their husband in marriage - their lord.
Those who don't, who whatever reason, are effectively banished from society, their property, land and herds taken away, only clothing and weapons remain.
However, while surviving on the steppe alone is hard, it's not impossible. And when faith is the only thing keeping you from rising the harshness of the steppe - losing it might be liberating.
And that is not the only curse that might be a blessing.

One of the characters in a fantasy novel I am writing. Having betrayed her future husband, She's now exiled and cursed. Such things didn't stop her ambitions, and she now seeks to gain back her wealth and position, whatever it might take.
I also suggest listening to This as an accompanying piece. I listen to loops of the HU while drawing and writing anything relating to this world
