Description

This village is for a particular type of person.

You have to be the kind that can make their own fun, someone that can easily amuse themselves and keep themselves busy. I was anxious at first, when I first took the train to Place a couple months ago, because I wasn’t sure if I even was that kind of koala. Thankfully, I’ve proven myself otherwise; I write poems, read books and enjoy the fact that I’m far away from home. I can’t give myself too much credit, however, as the first five or six months here were interesting enough to keep me distracted.

If you had told me that Place’s mayor would be a weird looking shaven ape who demonstrates no prior experience in politics, abandons his town for a tropical island only to return dressed as Santa Claus in a bizarre attempt at asking for forgiveness I’d have probably given you credit for your active imagination. Weirder still, was how that stunt during Toy Day actually kinda worked on me! I wouldn’t say that me and the mayor are close friends or anything, but we certainly do keep each other on our toes. He continues to surprise me with how he of all people ever got elected and I make sure he’s not getting himself into trouble… most of the time. Let’s not discuss the time he just needed to catch a bee for the museum exhibit…

I caught him leaving town hall with a drained expression on his face. Something heavy seemed to be on his mind. Either that, or his secretary had once again reminded him of the responsibilities that he had so gallantly dedicated himself to at the start of the year. Nothing new to see.

“You feeling okay, mayor?” I asked, leaning against a nearby pear tree. He sighed and slowly approached me.

“I’m just a little overwhelmed” he said, lazily unearthing a fossil from the ground beside me. “I thought that running a place this small would be easy, but there’s so much to do!”

“Just be glad that you’re only the mayor of Place and not in charge of a big city or anything” I smirked. “Say, I’m reading something right now that says that your favourite kind of flower can determine what’s most likely to help you focus in your current situation. Wanna try it out?”

He didn’t look all that convinced but at the same time I could tell he was willing to try anything to ease his muddled mind. We walked and talked. It wasn’t like I fully believed in this stuff either, but I found it interesting. I gave him a list of five flowers: Sunflower, Daisy, Hyacinth, Gladiolus and Anemone. He chose sunflower… because it was one of the only ones he recognised.

“It says all you need to be happy right now is… a new hat!”

“Of course!” he exclaimed “Why didn’t I think of that before? Ingenious…”

“Happy to help. But seriously, if there’s anything I can do to help, just let me know. It could help relieve the stress a little.”

“Ah, you don’t need to worry your pretty little head about that. I’ve got it aaaalll under control” he explained, unconvincingly.

“Suit yourself” I huffed, a little annoyed by his attitude. I was hoping for something save me from potential boredom more than anything.

“Besides” he went on “it’s my job to help you. I’m a man of the people you know, Alice. Leaders like me don’t come around often.”

“You don’t say?”

“Umhum. Speaking of which, you got any chores for me before I head to Main Street?”

“Well” I thought, not really needing anything right now “I’ve been kinda interested in having a fish to keep in my house…”

“Say no more!” he beamed and quickly replace the shovel in his hand for a flimsy fishing rod “What’ll it be? Ocean? River? Something from the pond near ReTail?”

“Err… ocean, I guess?”

“You got it, barber pole! Oh, and I’m working on boosting my approval rating” he said in a half-whisper “you wouldn’t mind putting in a good word for me once this is done, would you?”

I agreed, of course, but if he calls be ‘barber pole’ one more time I’m voting against him in the next election.

…Place has elections, right?

Here’s our first Alice episode of the season. She’s gonna play quite a large role this time around compared to season one, so if you’re a fan of hers, you’re in luck.

This chapter was basically just to reintroduce her and to sort of settle you in to the status quo of the village somewhat.
