Description
One thing I’ve learned from covering for Isabelle is that the town hall is a pretty lonely place. It’s just you, a ticking clock and more paper than there are trees outside (and hopefully a hot beverage too). I’ve seen Alice poke her head inside, Stinky comes by to let me know that he’s done doing my chores for the day and Peggy and Simon have shown up as well, but for the most part it's just been me. The heating in this place also isn’t great, especially since we’re nearing December.
It’s hard not to think of my secretary the more time I spend here.
Hopefully once we’re out of this beautiful town ordinance we can afford to spruce this place up a bit. For her sake more than mine.
Becky walked in today, which was definitely a surprise.
Always one to be blunt, the first words to escape her beak were:
“I’m going.”
“Huh? But you just walked in.”
“No, Mayor,” she tutted. “Place. I’m leaving Place.”
“Oh…”
This is usually the part where I begin to beg for an explanation. Or similarly, grovel at their feet until they agree to stay. But this time, given the mess we’re in, I was depressingly understanding.
“...it's that bad, huh?” I asked, faking a chuckle. “I suppose everybody knows about how much of a disaster this beautiful town ordinance has been.”
Becky nodded. “They do.” Then she shook her head again. “But that’s not why I’m moving out, Mayor.”
Placing her residential paperwork on the desk, she turned away to look out of the window. This was the first time I’ve had to do the dirty work of officially signing somebody out of town.
“I really tried to make the most of it, you know?” Becky said, wistfully. “After all the… stuff I was involved in earlier this year, I genuinely wanted to make amends with you all…”
“Oh, Becky,” I couldn’t help but interrupt, “don’t worry about all that stuff! It’s water under the bridge! Nobody thinks less of you for it.”
“Not nobody,” she mused. “I won’t mention names, but there are plenty that still see me as one of the reasons the town is in debt.”
I can’t help but cringe at the D-word.
“But really,” she sighed, “I just don’t think I can stay here. Even if nobody ever passed judgement, I just don’t feel like I belong here. It’s too quiet. Too simple.”
She chuckled to herself and turned away from the window. “I’m the sort of lady that tags along with criminal masterminds, you see.”
“I getcha,” I said. “So… does that mean you’re going back into the villain business?”
“Heavens no!” she laughed (clucked?), “I just need more excitement in my life to try and move on from my past sins. Besides, everywhere I go in Place, I’m just reminded of Vladimir. It’s been killing me.”
“I’m sorry if I made you feel obligated to stay…”
“No, no, it was never anything to do with you, Mayor. It was my decision to try and ‘redeem’ myself, but I think I’ve been going about it all wrong.”
I gave her back her forms and stuff. To be honest, I don’t bother remembering the names of these things and just look for certain logos and formatting to tell each piece of paper apart.
“You’ll find the bonfire near the beach has been fully donated to,” Becky said, suddenly. “It’s the least I can do before I flee the scene of my crimes.”
“Really?” I smiled. “That’s awesome! Thanks Becky!”
“Not at all,” she smiled back. “You may also discover that the little gyroid you have out there is carrying a few bells extra.” She winked. “That’s on me.”
She began to strut towards the front door, probably hoping to part on that line, but I wasn’t satisfied with that.
“Becky?” I called out as she opened the door. She faced me, expectantly. Truth is, I wasn’t sure what I wanted to say.
“Good luck out there,” I decided on, “a-and I’m sorry that things didn’t turn out so great.”
“Not at all,” she smiled, warmly. “And likewise, I wish you the best. I really do.”
And that was the last time I saw her.
~Author’s Notes~
Not to sound dramatic or anything, but I kinda feel as if I really failed Becky as a character. Her appearances were so few and far between this season and given her role in s2 you’d probably expect her to get some more focus. Still, in her send-off, I kinda wanted to touch upon how a lot of people pick up Animal Crossing only to realise that they just don’t vibe with it after a few months (or less) and how that's totally fine. It’s a very loose kind of metatextual thing, but whatever.
Also DA is looking really messed up on my end so if this comes out weird I apologise.
