_____________
The police gave up. In the final report it was publicly published as a suicide, even though there had been multiple signs of others with the young girl when she disappeared. Leaving her family without answers. They buried an empty casket. The day of the funeral after the processions, Lotus returned to her room, leaning heavily on her cane. Halfway up the stairs she collapsed, nearly tumbling down to the ground floor of their home. She had to be carried back up to her room. Her brother stayed by her bedside for around a half hour before leaving, thinking her to be asleep. After all of the surgeries, Lotus had been left utterly exhausted, so it would have surprised him if he knew that she was still awake, staring at the empty wall beside her bed. The expression in her eyes unreadable.
The grave sat at the base of the mountain, in the garden behind the barn, beneath the willow tree. It was the most beautiful place there. Every day she would return to the small grave with the empty coffin. She would bring buttercups, and a book. Some days she would read a loud, others she would sit beside the grave and silently read. At this point it would be the only way she kept sanity.
The day of the funeral was a grim one. The house was dark and cold. Storm clouds gathered outside her window, past the drawn curtains. Lotus carefully got up from her bed and took hold of the bed post as she approached the window. Slowly she opened the curtains and looked out. From here she could see the garden, and the mountain path. Two reminders of what she had lost. She knew of heaven and god. She knew of the life beyond this mortal one. So why was it that she felt so much sorrow, so much pain, and hopelessness. Why was it that when she looked out at the forest, climbing up the steep hills of the mountain, she felt as if she'd never see her sister again.
Lotus cried herself to sleep that night, just like every night before. She awoke to her grandmother's gentle hands running through her black tresses, a lullaby escaping her lips. From that day on, Lotus didn't sing, she didn't dance or play the piano like she did before going off to become a soldier. Her golden brown eyes had become sad, dull, and grey. She didn't smile very often, nor did she laugh. It wasn't until her family gathered enough money to get her an ESA (Emotional Support Animal), did she finally find a reason to live. She was gifted a small kitten, which she quickly named Muffin after the stuffed cat she had as a little girl. Little by little, her smile returned, and this time it was genuine.
Two years have passed since her sister's disappearance, and Lotus still finds herself looking out at the mountain, wondering if by some sliver of a miracle her sister will come back.
"I'm sorry Frisk." Lotus whispered as a tear ran down her cheek. Her fingers clutched the curtains tightly, nearly pulling them from the wall. Slowly she drew them closed and she was plunged into darkness.
