Description
these are the basics of making glass in maya that i use.to get basic glass in maya is pretty simple.
create a blinn shader and apply it to the wineglass.
open up the shader in the attribute editor and change these parameters
under common material attributes------------------------------ ---
Color - drag slider to left so your glass is completely black (if its colored glass you need to make it a really dark color)
Transparency - turn this all the way to the right so your glass is completely transparent (bring it around 3/4 of the way if a colored glass)
under specular shading options--------------------------------- ---
eccentricity at 0.140 (this controls the thickness of the highlight)
specular roll off at 0.500 to 0.900 (the higher it is the more shiney your glass will be)
under raytracing options--------------------------------- ---------
change refractive index to 1.500
and there you have your glass
make sure raytracing is turned on in the render globals, and remember that the glass will only look as good as what its reflecting and refracting.
In the image above i used a photo wrapped in a sphere to cast the reflections.
