There really WAS an earthquake in St. Louis in 1811 - an earthquake so strong that the Mississippi River actually ran backwards, if eyewitness accounts are to be believed. Those items Rafe and Quentin discovered - the bones, the pickaxe, the spectacles - looked like they originated from that time period.
