Chapter 5

Once Zach left the Intelligence Chamber, he spotted something he hadn't notice before on the wall next to the elevator. A big map showing a fully laid out plan of the penthouse was placed up against the wall. He couldn't remember it being there before, but it was sure useful at the moment. According to the map, the Training Rooms were on the floor level just below where he currently was.

He couldn't help but notice a slight build up of adrenaline at the thought of finding out how the Avengers go about fighting, as he got into the elevator and pushed the button for the second floor. As the elevator doors dinged open just a moment later, he couldn't help but feel an odd sense of foreboding at the deserted corridor ahead of him. It was much too quiet and empty for comfort. Pushing back the thoughts of danger, Zach started down the corridor to the room the map had said was used for physical training.

It wasn't long before a feeling so strong that it compelled him to duck passed through his body. He was just in time too as his attacker's fist bolted over his head, missing him by mere inches. Instinctively, Zach rolled backwards to get behind his attacker and aimed a karate kick straight at the back of his head. His attacker turned around quickly enough to catch him by the foot though and with one swift upward jerk, Zach ended up with his back on the cold floor. Benji was grinning down at him.

"Looks like Mr. 3rd Degree black belt has a pretty good sense of detecting danger," Benji said as he clapped his hands before helping Zach back onto his feet.

Zach stared wide-eyed at Benji. "How did you know that!? Have you been stalking me or something?" he asked.

Rolling his eyes, Benji replied, "Ha-ha, no. I have these little birds that whisper all your secrets to me all the time, you know? Not really, I have better things to do with my time than any of that, Zachie-boy. We all went over your profile last night after you fell asleep."

Zach didn't even bother asking, he knew it would just earn him another stupid reply like the birds tidbit.

"Well, what are we going to do now? Just stand here and stare at each other?" he asked.
Benji gave a growl and opened a door to his right.

"So eager to get your butt kicked and used to mop the floor with?" he asked as he entered the room. "Sit down somewhere and do everything I tell you to," he ordered.

Zach stared in wonder at the room they were in. The walls were lined with guns, swords, axes, daggers, spears and all other manner of weaponry one could think of.

Noticing Benji's scowl, he quickly sat down on a short piece of wall and looked expectantly at Benji.

"Close your eyes, Zach. Think about something you will need in a fight and hold out your hand. Now imagine that something materializing in your hand," Benji said while watching him curiously.

Zach did everything Benji said and soon started to feel his powers tingling through his right arm and escalating in a powerful force of power, making him panic.

Benji saw Zach twitch and his brows knit together in a worried look and quickly placed a hand on his shoulder. "Stay calm and focus, Zach. It will not harm you," Benji said.

Doing as Benji said, he focused harder as flashbacks from his childhood life blazed across his mind at the speed of light. Suddenly it was all over and he felt a weight in his hand. As he opened his eyes, he saw a large sword in his hand.

"Ahh... the Bullet Blade, eh? Slice 'n' Dice 'em before popping a cap in them, huh? Lucky choice, punk," Benji said as he looked the sword over.

Zach looked the sword over as well and marveled at how perfectly it fit and felt in his grasp. "Wow, it feels awesome!" he said excitedly.

"Well then, it looks as if gun swords are your preferred weapon type. I prefer double blades myself, that way it's double the fun!" Benji gloated. "Ah, but to each his own I supposed Zachie-boy. It doesn't mean you're any good with that yet though."

"Gun blade... Does it mean I will run out of ammo sometime?" Zach asked.

Benji chuckled and replied, "Heh, just the idiotic question I knew you'd ask. Our technology is much more advanced than that, as I'm sure you know by now. Gun swords use their wielder's will to power themselves. It makes its own bullets as long as the wielder stays calm and focused."

Zach stood and started to swing and thrust the blade in the air.

"It maneuvers in every way I want it to without effort... This is amazing!" he said in an awed tone. He had thought that a blade would have been heavier and difficult for him to hold and maneuver, but the Bullet Blade was as if it had been made for him. He picked up the sheath for the blade and attached it to his belt.

"Well, Zachie-boy, let's see how capable of maneuvering against me you are," Benji said as he drew his twin blades from their sheaths.

Zach looked at the weapons all around them and the limited space there was to move in. "Err, don't you think we'd damage the weapons in here if we did that?" he asked.

Benji looked around and harrumphed. "I guess you're right, punk. Well, follow me then," he replied while heading out the door and down the corridor.

Zach quickly followed after Benji and examined his sword along the way. There was no visible trigger he could pull to release the bullets and he couldn't find anything to indicate one, no matter how hard he searched. After finding nothing, a brilliant idea popped into his head.

"Shoot sword, SHOOT!" he commanded and a bright bullet sprang away from the tip of the sword. The bullet hit one of the thick, metallic walls and ricocheted away from it and straight at Benji.

Benji swiftly brought his daggers up to block and slice the bullet apart in mid-air. "Well, brat... it looks like you've learned how to shoot. Now all we have to teach you is how to aim," he replied while giving Zach a glare.

Zach chuckled in a guilty manner and quickly apologized for his mistake as they stopped in front of the entrance to a large open area.

"Here we are then, kid. Now we can see how you do with a weapon," Benji said. "Once we take our places, the computer will automatically countdown a certain time before it gives the signal to start the fight."

Both quickly got into positions opposite of each other and waited for the signal to sound. Zach couldn't help but feel nervous about what was about to happen. He had seen what a mean attitude Benji had more times than he cared to remember already and now he was supposed to fight against him. He hoped for all he was worth that Benji would go easy on him as it was his first training battle.

As the signal sounded, he charged at Benji with his sword and repeatedly tried to land a blow but it was to no avail. Benji easily dodged his every move with an agility he had never thought the man could possess. He had a much harder time to dodge Benji's attacks and to block hem with his sword and all the while he had an idea that Benji was really going easy on him.

"Yo! Step it up!" Benji shouted before taunting him some more. "Come on... Where's that skill? I could beat you blind-folded with one blade and the other hand tied behind my back!"

Forgetting everything he'd ever read or been told about a match, Zach let his anger get the best of himself. This advantage caused Benji to gain huge ground in the fight and if Zach hadn't dodged just in time, he could probably have lost an arm.

His anger hadn't just been his downfall though, as he charged at Benji and clashed his sword against Benji's blades with all his might. The blow was strong enough to send Benji sliding backwards and almost tripping.

Benji growled with some effort and pushed back against Zach's blades. "Not bad, brat! Now let's try incorporating your powers into the battle," Benji said as a small bead of sweat ran down his forehead.

Benji reached his one hand out and up into the air as it glowed with an eerie blue light and a flare of blue power rapidly rose into the air before blinking out of sight.Zach got worried when he saw the blue orb of power vanish in mid-air. He had no idea how to fight an invisible enemy and instead threw a yellow flare of power at Benji in annoyance.

Benji easily dodged the flare and grinned at him. "Prepare yourself, kid. Rune Wreck!" Benji shouted.

Zach looked up just in time to see the blue flare growing bigger as it sped down towards him. As the attack hit him, small shockwaves ran throughout his body as mist from the attack obscured his vision.

Benji stood patiently waiting in battle stance for the mist to clear only to reveal an annoyed and somewhat sizzling Zach. "Ahaha, I win!" Benji said in triumph while laughing at Zach's hair that stood even more on edge than it normally seemed to.

Zach growled and put his blade away, getting a nasty little shock from it as well. "What's so funny?" he asked.

"Oh, just your hair seems much more gravity resistant than normal, kid," Benji replied with a grin.

Zach gave him a cold glare and ran a hand through his hair to get it back to normal. "Huh, laugh while you can Benji, but I definitely owned you just now for a beginner," he said and smirked.

"Oi, it was just a tutorial, kid. Don't go getting cocky just yet," Benji replied with a dark scowl.

"Yeah, yeah. Whatever man," Zach replied as he walked out the door. He was quite pleased with how
he had done for his first time. Maybe he could be a pretty awesome fighter some day even.

"Do you even know where you're going, hotshot?" Benji shouted after him.

"To Sarah's!" Zach shouted back without turning around as he got into the elevator.

Benji stared at the disappearing back of the boy as he got into the elevator and grinned. "That kid really is something... He may be just what we need after all."

As Zach walked down the hall after he got out of the elevator, he examined his sword more thoroughly. He just couldn't believe how perfect the sword fit with him. He really felt like it had been made especially for him and him alone.

Putting the sword away again, Neariah's voice sounded over the intercom in the hall. "Zach, come to the Conference Room. I repeat, Zach to the Conference Room please!"

Sighing, Zach walked to the Conference Room and wondered what would be next, but all thought of what was to come fled from his mind at the sight of Sarah's body lying in a pool of blood in the middle of the hall.

Shock, fear and revulsion featured themselves on his face as he stood paralyzed in horror. "S-s-s...Sarah?" he stuttered in a shaky tone.

Finally gaining enough use over his limbs again to bend down over her body to examine the damage, he couldn't help as a tear ran down his cheek. How had such a thing happened? He had barely gotten to know the girl.

"I wish I could heal you..." he whispered.

Suddenly a yellow aura formed around his hand and shaped itself around Sarah's whole body. It wasn't a second later that Sarah back-flipped up into a standing position and winked at Zach.

Zach stared at her in shock, relief, concern and frustration. "What the heck happened, Sarah!?"
Sarah grinned even more as she rocked back and forth on her heels while swinging her arms. "I just taught you Medic, silly!" she said excitedly.

Zach frowned and observed the blood a little closer now that he was no longer in shock. For some reason, it smelled a little too much like tomato to have been blood. He had been fooled.

"Why did you do that, Sarah!?" Zach shouted, completely annoyed with himself for letting himself be fooled. "I was almost scared to death myself!"

Sarah's smile faded a little as she became serious again. "Well Zach, Avenging Powers are born out of strong emotions most of the time. The stronger an emotion is at a certain moment, the bigger the chances that a power can be born from it. Medic is a basic power that all Avengers have," she explained.

"Still... it wasn't very nice of you," Zach said with a small sigh before smiling a little.

"Oh please don't be mad at me!" Sarah said worriedly and jumped at Zach for a big bear hug. "But thank you for worrying about little ol' me!"

Blushing, Zach gently pulled back from the hug before replying, "Um...yeah."

"Okay, time to go to the Conference Room! For more little wonders!" Sarah shouted excitedly and bolted off.

Zach couldn't help but to sigh again and wonder what other little 'horrible' wonders were in store for him.
