Chapter 2
His vision shifting between consciousness and unconsciousness, Zach barely registered at first the female figure appearing to block the priest's blow. Narrowing his eyes a little and fighting hard to shake off his dizziness, he was finally able to make out the form of Neariah.
Neariah was fighting back against the priest as he tried to attack her again and again in anger over being interrupted. Zach stared in wonder as Neariah fluidly blocked or dodged all the blows the priest threw at her. He'd never know she could be so effective in a fight, while she was able to evade most of the priest's attacks, he was having a quite hard time to evade hers.
Neariah moved as agile and graceful as a cat in her evasion of the priest newest attacks. Zach noticed that the priest seemed to get even sloppier in his movements than before as his anger was getting the best of him.
Zach shook his head again a few times and tried to stand up to help her, but he only lost his balance again and ended up sprawled on the floor. As Zach lifted himself back up by his elbows, he heard a serene voice murmuring in his head. "Zach, now you have finally seen the truth. I have blessed and gifted you with the necessary power and strength you will need for the coming trials. My people need you, lead them back to their origin," the voice said with an authority Zach has never heard before.
As soon as the voice faded from his mind again, Zach felt his body start to tingle all over before turning into a strong burning feeling. As soon as it came, it was over again and Zach sat in amazement over feeling no pain at all anymore. As Zach got up with no trouble, he noticed that his body seemed foreign to him now. He felt different, strange and undeniably stronger than he had ever felt in his life before.
Neariah who was still dodging the attacks from the priest, finally turned slightly to look at Zach and gasped in wonder. No longer did there stand a young boy, thin, lanky and very ordinary looking. Instead there stood a boy who looked like he knew how to command authority, who knew he had just been given the most important mission of his life.
Neariah looked at Zach's face, somehow he looked more mature now. His once brown colored eyes were now tinted to a golden color. The look made him seem almost ethereal.
"Neariah!"
Neariah returned his focus to the priest just in time and managed to restrain him, but her lack of attention had put her into a disadvantaged stance.
"Zach! I need help!" Neariah shouted, "Focus all your attention to your hand, feel the electric pulses build and then release the tension. Let go of it all!"
Zach did as she said and focused so hard on his hand that his head started to ache even more. Slowly, but surely, he could feel tingling electrical pulses build up into an almost unbearable burning feeling. Once it became too much to bear he let go of it, just like Neariah said. He just let all thought of the burning and the building energy leave his mind.
The release of energy, allowed a powerful magical blast of power to flair through the air between him and the priest busy trying to choke Neariah. The blast of golden energy hit the priest square in the back with an almost horrid, sizzling sound. The priest crumpled to the floor and remained still.
Zach gasped in awe and horror. What had he just done? How did he do that? Is he some sort of mutant now all of a sudden? Zach couldn't stop the flow of these thoughts from racing through his mind at light speed.
"What the hell!?" were the most accurate words Zach could think of. He looked over again at the priest who was still lying motionless on the ground, his face pale and his eyes sightless.
"I...I k-k-killed him..." Zach stuttered, gasping for air in shock. Suddenly he was feeling dizzy again and sagged back down onto his knees on the floor.
Neariah had knocked the other priest who had been chanting earlier unconscious and was now hurrying over to Zach. Lifting him tenderly back onto his feet, she surveyed the area cautiously for any other signs of danger.
"Zach, you need to listen to me. There is no time to explain right now, but I promise I will explain everything to you once we are safe. For now though we have to go. Follow me!"
The urgency in Neariah's voice motivated Zach to overcome most of his headache and dizziness enough to run after Neariah. They ran through the hall and out of a side entrance that was rarely ever used anymore since the church had been expanded.
Neariah's car stood nearby the exit, and they quickly got into it. Once Neariah closed her door, she started the car immediately and drove off at a remarkable speed. Zach started to feel dizzy again as she zipped past the other cars without much effort.
Zach was sitting in stunned silence, his mind finding it incredibly hard to sort through everything that had just happened. He had just gotten mysterious magical powers, he had just killed a man, and his family probably had no idea where he was. He stopped. His family...
"Neariah!" Zach said in a shocked tone, "Mom, Father, Nero... we have to go back. They won't have any idea where I am."
Neariah reached underneath the side of her seat and Zach could distinctly hear the sound of a switch being flipped. Keeping her eyes on the road, Neariah sighed softly. "For insurance," she said, seeing Zach look at her questioningly from the corner of her eye.
"You need to listen to me now, Zach. What you just saw is a very serious matter indeed. Those were the Deceivers. They are in control of everything. From the Government, to the Media, to the educational systems used in the schools, even to what you worship. They control it all," she said, tapping her fingers gently on the steering wheel. "I am part of the rare few people who have woken up to the truth and figured out them out for who they are. We are called the Avengers. We work in service of the Highest One... the real Highest One."
Neariah turned her head slightly to see if Zach was paying attention before continuing with what she was saying. "There is no time to go back for your family right now. Your life is in danger, Zach. I'm going to take you to my house so you can meet the rest of us, alright?"
Zach nodded slowly, but remained quiet for a little while before finally replying. "If they control everything... then is it safe for you to say all that out loud? How would you know we're not bugged or anything?" Zach started to feel the slight nagging feelings of fear eating at his senses.
Neariah gave him a small smile while still paying attention to the road instead of looking at him. "Normally, yes. But the switch I flipped creates an ultrasonic disturbance around us that is so powerful that it blocks any speech that could have been picked up by the satellites in space. They use those things for almost everything," Neariah explained. "They are not the only ones with advanced technology though."
Zach nodded as they pulled up to a large apartment building. As they got out and started to climb the stairs up to the door, Zach noticed his head was feeling better again, yet he still couldn't seem to think clearly. He looked around tentatively, the stairway was rusted and the floors were decorated with grime and dust.
As they continued to climb the stairs, Zach nearly fell backwards when a smell suddenly assaulted his nose. The smell was strong enough to compel him to ask, "Don't you guys ever clean up around here?"
Neariah gave a somewhat unladylike snort before replying, "Hmm, and this is coming from the 14-year old boy whose own bedroom smells pretty much the same?"
Zach growled in reply, making Neariah give a small victory laugh. "Oh shut up, Zach. Here we are," she said as she stopped in front of a slightly rusted door with a keypad lock. Neariah typed in a password so quickly that he couldn't make out what it was and then said some foreign sounding words. Once she said the last word, an audible click could be heard from the door. Neariah smiled at him and pushed open the door.

I feel that your explanation of Nea's fight was a bit undefined. I think it may have been better if you went a little more blow-per-blow rather than saying she was graceful and the priest had trouble dodging. I feel the voice should have demanded more description being that it's important. Was it a womans voice or a mans? Did they sound old or wise or ageless or childish? etc. I love your description of how it would feel to hold an energy blast - very unique.
I like your description of Zach's dazedness and confusion. It makes sense for all he'd just gone through. I feel a connection has appeared from the reader to Zack. e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s⦠" width="15" height="15" alt="

I wonder, is the door old/dirty too? I think it may have added some more scenery to say if the door creaked open or something like that.
I gotta say, this story is very interesting. I love the ideas.
Hope it helps! e.deviantart.net/emoticons/p/p⦠" width="15" height="15" alt="
