Cult Quest Part 1 Writiting, Word Count: 2772

Claws clattered and tails slithered against the floor in anticipation for the Master Whisper to speak. Today was the day he dreaded. He didn’t want to speak. He wanted Cypress to do it all. But—it would be good to speak now, wouldn’t it?

He explained a few of the traps’ mechanisms and went over the small details. The cult’s base held many secrets—few he knew and many he didn’t. He traced the map with his talons, pointing to where all the traps were.

When Master Cypress took care of everything else, he was relieved that he didn’t have to explain anymore. His heart was racing and pounding out of his chest, even if he didn’t want to feel nervous—he was going to prove himself, finally. Perhaps he would feel like more after all this.

The rest of the meeting was a bit of a haze for him. He was afraid that the Alliance Dragons looked at him like he was the enemy, so he avoided their gazes. Cypress explained the plan, she was very particular, with every detail going into specifics, every choice well-thought out. Soon, he’d be infiltrating his old home; a place he used to call home, at the very least.

He felt better seeing Wolfchaser stand by his side. Wolfchaser… he was loath to admit it, but she’d had been a comforting presence to him ever since he’d become her apprentice. There was something about the old dragon that reminded him of his mother, a sort of warmth that the old Icewing carried with her. He turned his attention back to Cypress, the rest of the Alliancers in the room fading to the background as he listened.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

Eventually, the briefing ended. Sovereign watched as the dragons made their way out of the meeting room until it was just him, Wolfchaser, and Cypress. He got to his feet and nodded at the master, feeling her gold eyes watching him like he was a peculiar small animal.

He felt nervous around the Master Whisperling. He had never really spoken with her, and he was sure that the day he ever did, he wouldn’t know what to say.

Wolfchaser followed the young gold hive hybrid out, and soon they were off to prepare for their trip to the Scorpion Den.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

The heat blazed, seeping into his scales. The air felt dry enough to start a fire all on its own. He felt like he was being watched—he always did when he had lived within the cult lair. There were many things he did with them, many terrible things he did with the dragons there he used to call “family.”

They eventually stood at one of the entrances of the large sandstone-and-marble mansion. At one point in his life, the familiar building gave him a sense of warmth, but all that was left now was an uneasy feeling in his stomach. The wind whistled through a grey sky as the mansion loomed over them. There was something off-putting about it;. it looked as new as can be, but the mansion looks faded and old, sand crumbling off the structure. It had once looked bright in the gold hybrid’s eyes. It had looked perfect.

This was once home. This had been his “salvation.” It had “saved” him.

He hated these feelings, he hated how he felt towards this place. The mansion eerily called out to him, it was home! Come back! Come HOME. COME. BACK. HOME.

They were suddenly in front of one of the mansion windows. It looked normal on the inside, a lot of dragons would think that. But these halls truly held monstrous wonders.

Sovereign looked down at his group mate. Plover was a small seawing, a little odd but seemed like they could pocket a whole lot. Plover looked calm, cool, and collected. Something he wished he could pull off. There was something in their eyes that said something. It was if they knew something deeper, perhaps something no one else knew.

Silver Soul stood behind them, his eyes watching Sovereign with a worried glance. Silver always looked like he knew something. Sovereign tried to scramble his thoughts as much as he could. Silver Soul shouldn’t have to see how he was feeling. He didn’t want Silver to see what he’d faced, what he did.

Sovereign had managed to crack the window open enough for them to slip in. The sandstone felt rough on his talons as he boosted himself up and through the window. He dusted his talons off and nodded at Silver and Plover to follow.

The next thing he knew, they had found Hen and Wolfchaser. They’d gotten to a room and had managed to find a way in through a bookshelf. It felt old, every breath he took, he smelled dust. The smells were coming back to him. The way the mansion had smelled of old books, the way it smelled of the desert sand….old familiar things that filled his head with memories. But there was always that vague scent of iron.

He could remember a fountain vividly. It was made from white marble, a horrible liquid pouring out of dragon’s maw. He could remember the times he passed by it. Once more he did pass by it in the dark marble hall they followed. He sometimes felt the fountain watching him. It had unblinking eyes, its stony gaze watching him wherever he went. He swore there had been a sort of dark liquid in it at one point. A strange aroma came from it on occasions he’d pass it. But one day it was clear. Just normal water.

They had passed through another hall. The hall was a bit longer and had fewer hiding spots. Occasionally, the three dragonets would cram themselves into a corner to hide from a cult member wandering the hall. He was glad he didn’t have to knock anyone out. If they did, at least Wolfy or Hen could easily take care of it. As for Hen and WolfChaser, they hid where they could. As they scampered down the hall, the hive hybrid halted. He glanced down at the very trap before him. It was one of those quick sand ones. The hybrid had almost been caught in one during his time as a member. With ease, the group managed to cross the treacherous trap.

He shook the thought of the trap out of his head and settled down on the floor. They were in one of the rooms in the black marbled hallways. The walls were decorated to the brim with tapestries of the mark that was engraved into his palm. He looked around the room nervously, he felt like the tapestries were ripping into his scales, his very soul. It almost burned to look at the gold and purple cloth. The eyes were sewed delicately into the large tapestry, yet were almost messy. Gold strings stuck out from the back and loose threads broke through the pattern at the front. He had the odd sensation to touch them, to familiarize himself with the haunting room.

“Sovereign? You alright?” Wolfchaser’s voice called him back from his trance. He turned to look at her, his eyes watery and dark. “Yeah. I’m okay.” “So, we’re near the Inner Circle’s room. Near here, there’s cells scattered through here. Though there’s likely a few that way.” Sovereign pointed to one of the halls. By the hall, a statue glanced back at him. Her pearly eyes, her wooden talon reaching ever so delicately out to him. It felt like it was watching him, lurching for him to take her talon. Clearsight could do anything she wanted, he was in the goddesses domain now. This was no longer his home. But he had the inkling she may still hold his fate. He feared his fate, the smell of blood in the room didn’t help either.

“Uhm. Okay, there’s also a trap around this hall and one down there.” The hybrid pointed to the hall behind them, then the hall that was close by. Wolfchaser nodded, after he laid out most of the information the ebony dragon began to devise a plan. They could likely evacuate, or go for the leaders. There were several options as long as they didn’t get caught. Wolfchaser was a master with tactics. Sovereign was amazed every time by his mentor’s skills. He only hoped that he too one day could be as grand as the old dragon. Though, he himself wasn’t so sure about his fate. He could die here, he could be captured and never make it out. He just wanted to have some sort of control of his life now. He wouldn’t let that be taken.

The hybrid didn’t want to be seen as a villain. The hybrid didn’t want to be around dragons who couldn’t accept him, who couldn’t see who he was. Not just some menace. But so far, the hybrid had very few dragons in his life he could trust. But those few were the ones he held close to his heart.

Looking back at the group, Sovereign sighed. They were going to make it out. “Please be careful in this room. I don’t want—“ his heart sank quickly as he heard a large thud. A thud that sounded like wood against a marble floor. He turned around and found Hen, the old mudwing grasping at the floor to get up. Her talons put light grooves into the black marble. He felt like he could hear it, everything. All the sounds played on repeat, the thud, the crash, Clearsight’s calming yet terrifying gaze burning holes into his face. Crash, thud, crash, THUD. The statue's eyes burned to look at. His fate seemed sealed.

Talon steps suddenly echoed down the hall furthest from him. “Sovereign!” Silver Soul hissed softly. He had heard him, but oh moons was he too late, far too late to be saved. He didn’t make it to the next hall. Fear pierced his body, his eyes slowly turning to the figure coming down the hall who caught him.

“Sunbreaker~ is that you my dear?” A voice whispered. It was airy and familiar, a sweet and bitter sound he wished he never heard. “Please no, no, no, no,” he whispered to himself. He backed away from Undoing, trying to lead her away from the others as he tried to escape Undoing’s glare. “Leave me alone Undoing!” She kept getting closer to Sovereign until she was nose to nose with the hybrid. “Oh Sunbreaker? Why do you do this? Why did you leave my dear?” She rested a talon on his face. He felt frozen to her touch, it was terrifying. Her talons felt cold, soft, yet he could feel her claws trace his face roughly. It wasn’t enough to break scales, but it was surely enough to scare him.

“Why did you leave me?” Her eyes were glossy, beautiful light green orbs that once captured his heart. He looked away, straying from her gaze. He didn’t want to look at her, he didn’t want to see her eyes, he didn’t want to see the mark of Clearsight on her forehead.

Her silver brackets rattled as she turned his face to the side. “Look at me Sunbreaker, it’s rather rude that you're not after all this time,” she said. Her eyes were slits, her brow furrowed in thought. “Speak. Come now, why won’t you speak to me?” He closed his eyes, shuting them tight. This wasn’t happening! It couldn’t be! It had to be some trick! Some mind game that was being played on him!

“This isn’t a mind game if that’s what you’re thinking.” He felt like it was a mind game, it was always mind games with her. She’d never been like this. He never realized how much the cult had affected him, how it hurt her. Undoing was driven mad, she was selfish, she was bitter. “You’ve become so bitter, you drive off everyone who loves you,” he said.

She looked taken aback. She had never expected little Sunbreaker to speak out. She looked hurt. The silence was unnerving, too quiet to think. “We hurt dragons Undoing, the cult hurt us,” he said finally. “I loved you so much, you know that?” He whispered. The starry freckled dragoness was quiet. She looked like she was thinking, her brows furrowed, her eyes fogged in thought. “This—this was not in my vision,” she murmured. “Not all visions are true.”

She snarled “They can be, Clearsight warned me you’d be here! You’ve brought destruction to us!”

He pushed Undoing away from him and backed away. “Look at what they’ve done to you! You really believe those lies? Undoing, they’ve made me hurt dragons important to me. You never told me what you did to get into the cult!” He cried. He didn’t want this path for her, she could’ve had so much. They could have still been something.

“Why did you stay? Why? Is it because of the attention? Is it because of how they treat you as a seer? For Moons sake Undoing! What makes this place so special?” She looked at him with a confused expression. She looked as if she thought nothing of it. “This isn’t a cult, it’s a movement! We cleanse those who have lost their way! Clearsight brings us hope my dear!” She continued to press on. She wouldn’t stop. She was too enraptured with the cult’s message.

The dragoness reached her talons out to the hive hybrid. He couldn’t believe what she was trying to do. Egging him back? After all this time? Sovereign had done things to get into the cult that he still regretted. He killed his mother, he hurt the only two friends he had. He ruined his life. The cult ruined him.

“Don’t you see? Undoing, this place—it’s hurting you, messing with you. I don’t have a family anymore, I don’t have friends, you're not in my life either!” He backed away further from her, he didn’t want to get near her. “This place has destroyed us! Come with me? I’ll help you! We can get you the help you need! Please Undoing, we can at least be friends again… can’t we?” He said. He was hopeful she’d take this chance to get out. She could actually live her own life, she could be free!

“No,” she murmured. “Your out of your mind. They’ve poisoned you, they’ve hurt you.” She started to approach him slowly, her claws dragging against the marble. Her expression was—unsettling. She didn’t look like herself, it was almost animalistic. “I’ve been treated better here than I would anywhere else. This IS my family, you're nothing but a traitor Sunbreaker,” she cried.

Hearing his old name stung. He wasn’t Sunbreaker anymore, he’d never be. That dragon was long gone. “I’m not Sunbreaker,” he said looking away. “I’m not him anymore, I’m not as naive as you think.” He had his back almost turned to her, but he could feel her gaze on his back. “Sovereign is the only name I know. Isn’t it fitting?” He smiled weakly. It was a name he was proud of.

“What a stupid name for a stupid dragon!” She lunged and knocked the hivewing to the floor. He kicked and batted at the nightwing’s face, his tail lashing violently back and forth. He pushed her off with a powerful kick, quickly getting to his feet. He wasn’t going to die.

He turned tail and ran. He ran as fast as he could down the hall, his claws clacking against the marble floor. He ran through traps and leapt over mechanisms he remembered too well. His body raced with adrenaline, fear screaming in his mind. He ran and he ran until he bumped into a body of scales and spikes.

He was horrified, scared he had bumped into another cult member. He looked up slowly, ebony scales coating the dragon in front of him. As soon as he got to their face, he sighed with relief. Right in front of him was Wolfchaser. The ebony icewing looked at him with shock. But it suddenly turned to worry, her face furrowed with wonder.

“Sovereign? Did someone see you? Are you alright?” Sovereign shook his head up and down. He had bumped into someone. “An old dragon from my past,” he whispered. She nodded, seeming to understand the little he said. “It’s alright, why don’t we talk about it after our mission. Alright?” The old dragon pulled the gold hybrid in with her wing. With relief, Sovereign leaned into the old dragon’s comforting hug without a second thought.
