This is what I envision a Sophon to look like if it could imitate us. Concept for Cixin Liu's book series The Three Body Problem.
What is a Sophon? A Sophon is a Technological Ai Lock that prevents humanity from advancing further than where we are today. There is an alien civilization called the Trisolaran that are looking for a new home.
A few decades ago a woman lost her husband & then lost her empathy for humanity. She was a scientist & volunteered to work at a research center that analyzed space noise, lets say to make it easy & short.
Well she was sending out messages & one day, she got an empathetic reply & she was warned "I received your message, luckily for you, I am a pacifist, the rest of my people are not. For your sake & the sake of your planet, Do not respond. Do Not Respond! DO NOT RESPOND!!" ALL life on earth depended on her at that moment & the days passing, would she heed the warning? Or would she respond.
Obviously since I am presenting to you a Sophon, she did respond. Now we learn that the Universe is not a vast deep space but it is a Dark Forest & there are dangers all around & we just made our presence known.
The Trisolaran Fleet fire a droplet at Earth. This tiny droplet smaller than a drop of rain, traveling faster than the speed of light, lands on our planet, undetected due to the size of the object.
A Sophon has landed. It's job is to Lock us down unable to advance as a civilization.
They warned us that we would have 400 years to prepare. All our best minds are gathered to build a plan, little do they know that the job of the Sophon is to corrupt all research that we do so we get the wrong answers, meanwhile we believe them to be correct. There is no technology we can build that the Sophon cannot read & corrupt & adapt. If 2 & 2 equals a 4 then the Sophon will guide mankind to the discovery that it does not equal 4 but that it has always equaled a 5. This is the level of corruption the Sophon are capable of. There are no conversations that the sophon cannot hear & learn from, technology is everywhere. They would even help us make advancements to our technology but only for that technology to be a downfall to man.
So what can man do if any speech & any tech is monitored & corrupted?
We are nothing more that an open book to the Sophon, reading us page by page & writing our story for us without us ever fully knowing it. Luckily we have our minds.
