Scientists are growing what they call 'organoids' in lab settings. Including brain organoids. Not two long ago, a handful of these organoids began to develop rudimentary eyes. But the deeper question remains: how do we know id that brain organoid becomes conscious or not. There are definite ways to tell in humans, but in a thing with no senses or even the ability to flinch. While some researchers are concerned by this, others are not, such as one gentleman who stated 'I may need an organoid to be conscious)

Anyway, this was supposed to be a shoggoth, but then I noticed it was on some kind of metallic trey. A hand seems to be carrying the tray. I did not add any of that detail.
